 BROOKBANKS c1620-1680

m Mary c1650

Christopher was a yeoman farmer in the parish of Madresfield near Worcester when he died in 1680 possessing goods valued at £97 (equivalent to about £9000 today). But he baptised his four known children at nearby Hanley Castle.

He was probably born around 1620 and married his wife Mary around 1650, but no records of these events have been found

BIRTH

Christopher was probably married about 1650 and died in 1680.  No record is known which gives his age, but a birth date around 1620 might be expected.  No record of his birth has been found.  He baptised his children in the parish of Hanley Castle and the registers there commence in 1539 but the first BROOKBANKS reference is to the baptism of Christopher’s son William in 1653.  At his death he was a farmer of Madresfield where BTs go back to 1611, but the first BROOKBANKS reference is in 1686

MARRIAGE

Christopher 8 was baptised at Hanley Castle in 1655, son of Christopher & Mary.  A series of baptisms to these parents there begins in 1653, but no marriage of Christopher & Mary has been found; it is not in the Worcester m index or IGI.  It may have taken place around 1650 at Hanley Castle, but there are gaps in the registers there about this time so the record may be lost.

admon of Christopher BROOKEBANKE

26Jan1679/70 Mary BROOKEBANKE of Madresfield relict of Christopher BROOKEBANKE agricole late of Madresfield, admon of his goods and chattels.   signed by Marie BROOKEBANK, William BROOKEBANK, Christopher BROOKEBANKE, Will SANDERS

inventory 30Jan1679 Madresfield

this admon almost certainly refers to Christopher of Hanley Castle even though he was “late of Madresfield”; the date is just a few days after his burial and is signed by three Brookbanks whose names are those of his wife and two sons.  Moreover, Madresfield is just three miles from Hanley Castle; probably Christopher’s farm was in Madresfield, but the church of Hanley Castle was preferred perhaps because it was nearer
