BIRTH

According to the 1851 census, George BROWN was born 1791 at Waltham BRK.  However there are two Walthams in Berkshire, White Waltham and Waltham St Lawrence, both a few miles south of Maidenhead.

No suitable George Brown baptism was found at Waltham St Lawrence, but at White Waltham there were two BROWN families who baptised a George around this time:

m 9Jan1775 Robt BROWN of Upton & Eliz HESTER otp by banns

C 27Sep1786 George s Robt & Eliz BROWN

children baptised by these parents were Robert, Sarah, John, Thos, Elizabeth, Edward, Robert, George, Eliz, Harriet

Robert then married Olave BIRD and baptised Sarah, Eliz, Hannah, Robert

m 20Sep1782 Thos BROWN & Ann BROWN by licence

C 11Sep1796 George s Thomas (deceased) & Anne BROWN

children baptised by these parents were: James, Hannah, Thomas, Eleanor, Anne, George

Neither of these George BROWNs were married or buried at White Waltham and neither has been identified in the 1841 or 1851 census, so cannot be eliminated on these grounds.  The naming patterns do not help particularly, though George-5 baptised a Thomas but not a Robert, so the second marriage might be preferred.  Both baptisms are 5 years away from expected, but this is quite possible.  The Cookham register however, shows a George BROWN baptised in the expected year 1791, one of three illegitimate children of Elizabeth BROWN:

C 24Jul1791 George base born s of Elizabeth BROWN

C 27Mar1796 Melisent base born d of Elizabeth BROWN;  B 17Jul1797

C 17Oct1802 William Hawthorn base born s Elizabeth BROWN

followed by :

m 23Jan1803 Richard HAWTHORN & Elizabeth BROWN by banns

Richard HAWTHORN and his first wife, also Elizabeth, baptised children from 1783 to 1799 followed by the burial of the first Elizabeth HAWTHORN in 1801

It is not possible at present to decide between these three possibilities.   The index of overseer’s papers for Maidenhead Union (includes Bray Cookham and Waltham St Lawrence) did not contain any relevant references.

MARRIAGE

From the b certificate of Eliza, George BROWN married Sarah DOUGLAS.  From the 1851 census, Sarah was born c1794 in Bray so the expected marriage date is 1815, a year before the birth of Andrew.  The m is not in the IGI or in the Berkshire marriage index.

It would be an unusual coincidence for a father-in-law to have the same surname as his son-in-law and it seems this should be George BROWN; he is at the same address as in 1851 and of the right age.  (The enumerator entered the surnames of Eliza. Emma, and George as “ditto” to the head of the family).  George had a daughter Eliza bc1838, so if she married James Humphries, then George would be James’ father-in-law as stated in the census.  However a search of the marriage indexes shows only a marriage of James HUMPHRIES to Eliza PUSEY, registered at Cookham in 4Q1859.   The probable explanation is that Eliza Brown married Pusey before she married Humphreys, and there is a suitable marriage and death in the index:

m 4Q1853 Eliza BROWN & Frederick PUSEY; Cookham

d 4Q1858 Frederick William PUSEY;       Witney
