Christian or Christina Campbell was born in Aberfeldy in the parish of Dull, where she was baptised in 1804. Her father was a mason and when Christina was still a child the family moved to Perth. Here she married William Dingwall, a carpenter and chair maker, and they lived at Bridgend, just across the river Tay from the city of Perth. They had at least 5 daughters, but the eldest died young, and no surviving sons are known. The last 3 daughters were not baptised at the Church of Scotland, and they may have belonged to a dissenting congregation. William evidently found it hard to make ends meet as a chairmaker, and tried his hand at weaving before the family finally left Perth in 1848 when Christian was 43. They lived at various places before reaching Stirling in 1850. They were in the neighbouring village of St Ninians in 1851 when their daughter Margaret only 17 married a local nailer and produced a son within 3 months. Christian died in Spittal St, Stirling only a year later. Spittal St is the main road leading up to the castle. Cause of death was "cramp" - possibly tetanus? She was only 48. William moved on to Glasgow where he died in 1873. |

The 51
census birthplace is Renfrewshire c1807, but the 41 census is Perthshire
1801-6. The former appears to be a repetition
error, copying William's birthplace; William left Renfrew when only a few years
old so it is not likely that his wife came from the same county. The 41 Perthshire birthplace seems more
likely. Christian’s marriage record
gives her father as Peter, a mason; her first child was baptised Grace; parents
should therefore be Peter and Grace, and there is a suitable baptism in the OPR
at Dull:
C
6Feb1804 Christ d Peter CAMPBELL & Grace MACNAB in Aberfeldy [entered in register on 22Feb1804 so possibly 6Feb was date of birth]
there is
no other Peter CAMPBELL/Grace marriage in the OPR; there are other daughters of
Peter CAMPBELL baptised Christian but most of these have been eliminated. No other baptisms to Peter & Grace have
been found, but Peter & Grizell CAMPBELL baptised three children at
Perth 1814-1820. Grizell and Grace are
equivalent names and at the baptism of the first of these, the father was a
mason. There seems little doubt that
this is the correct baptism.
From the m
certificate of Helen DINGWALL-3, her parents were William DINGWALL and
Christina CAMPBELL, and from the 1861 census, she was born in Perth c1839. There is a suitable prior marriage at Perth:
m 1Aug1827 William DINGWALL of West parish of
Perth & Christian CAMPBELL otp being duly proclaimed were married
m
28Jul1827 William DINGWALL wright Scone parish & Christian CAMPBELL in West
Church, Perth; Father Peter CAMPBELL mason Perth
William’s father Roderick DINGWALL worked for the Earl of Mansfield at Scone Palace; it is fanciful, but possible, that Peter CAMPBELL also worked at Scone as a mason and may be that is how their son and daughter met
