Peter was born about 1773 and married Grace/Grizel MACNAB at Dull, Perthshire, in 1803. The following year a daughter was born when they were living at nearby Aberfeldy. Later the family moved to Perth where Peter was a mason. At least 3 more children were born there before Peter died in 1838 aged 65. Just before his death they were living at 151 High St in Perth. Grace remained in Perth until her death in 1858 |

From his
burial record, Peter was born c1773. He
was of Dull parish when he married in 1803 and at Aberfeldy in Dull in 1804
when his daughter was baptised. But he
died before the 1851 census so his place of birth is not known. Aberfeldy is
about 3 miles from Dull. Unfortunately
Peter (or the equivalent Patrick) Campbell is a common name in Perthshire, and
even if baptisms in Dull only are considered, there are two possible baptisms:
C
15Nov1775 Patrick CAMPBELL s Patrick & Janet DEOR at Dull
C
29Sep1776 Patrick CAMPBELL s James
& Margt STEWART at Dull
But other possibilities which cannot be
excluded include baptisms at Logierait (5 miles from Aberfeldy) Fortingall (7
miles) and Killin (14 miles) etc:
C 5Apr1770 Patrick CAMPBELL s Alex & Isobel REID at Logierait (Wester Ballyallanoch -
twin with John))
C
27Nov1771 Patrick CAMPBELL s John
& Margt SCOTT at
Logierait (Milntown of Pittagir)
C 13Feb1772 Peter CAMPBELL s Hugh & Janet McILLCHONIL at Killin
C Apr1773 Peter CAMPBELL
s Alexr & Margt McDIARMID at Killin
C 30Jan1774 Patrick CAMPBELL s
Duncan & Christian at Killin
C 28Feb1774 Patrick CAMPBELL s
Patrick & Janet at
Killin
C 25Sep1774 Patrick CAMPBELL s
John & Margt McVRACHAIR at Fortingall
C 26Mar1769 Peter CAMPBELL s John & Janet CAMPBELL
at Perth
C 17May1772 Peter CAMPBELL s Niel & Christian STEWART at Culross
C 12May1776 Peter CAMPBELL s Donald & Mary McCROSTIE at
Madderty
All the above are possible origins of Peter-5. Many of these Peter/Patricks must have remained in their parish as there are no fewer than 16 Peter and 2 Patrick marriages between 1790 and 1807 at Dull, Killin, Logierait etc, and it is difficult or impossible to allocate any of these m to the C above to eliminate them. The only Peter/Patrick MI found is at Fortingall: Peter Campbell 1836 age 80 which does not help.
Peter’s eldest son should be named after Peter’s father according to the Scottish naming pattern, but unfortunately the name of his eldest son is not known for sure, as the eldest known son, Robert, was born 10 years after the marriage, so there are almost certainly earlier baptisms
Other
children known to be born to the above two families at Dull are as follows:
m
10Apr1773 Patrick CAMPBELL & Janet DEOR
C 4May1774 Christian
C
15Nov1775 Patrick
C 1Nov1780 James
C
14Jan1784 Duncan
C
14Jan1786 Clementina
C
11May1790 Ispel
m
11Dec1773 James CAMPBELL & Margaret STEWART
C
19Oct1774 Duncan
C
29Sep1776 Patrick
And these
baptisms are followed by three possible marriages at Dull of a Peter Campbell:
m
24Nov1808 Peter CAMPBELL & Margaret MCLACHLAN both in this parish
C
10May1812 John (in Pitdarnie)
C
10May1814 Christ.
m
12Feb1810 Peter CAMPBELL & Grizel MACNAB both in this parish
C 6Feb1804 Christ. (in Aberfeldy)
Other
known children: Robert, David, Margaret Janet
m
4Feb1804 Peter CAMPBELL & Ann CAMERON
C
12Mar1804 Janet
C
10Nov1805 Margaret
C
15Nov1807 Donald (in Lagmacuchlaw)
Almost
certainly, the Peter who married Ann Cameron was the son of Donald CAMPBELL and
Janet McDONALD C10Nov1783 at Dull because of the names of his children. But even if the (unjustified) assumption is
made that Peter-Campbell-5 was born in Dull, it is still not possible to know
whether he was the son of Patrick & Janet or of James & Margaret and it
is difficult to see what further progress can be made.
The
baptismal record of Christian-4 at Dull in 1804 names her parents as Peter
CAMPBELL & Grace MACNAB. There is
no marriage to these parents at Dull or elsewhere in the OPR index. There is however a marriage to Grizel MACNAB
(the only one in the OPR) at Dull the year before:
m
12Feb1803 Peter CAMPBELL & Grizel MACNAB both in this parish gave up their
names to be proclaimed in order to marriage
Grace and
Grizel are equivalent names in Scotland and there is little doubt that this is
the correct marriage.
the OPR
index has 4 baptisms to Peter & Grace/Grizell and three of these have been
checked on original registers:
C 6Feb1804 Christ d Peter CAMPBELL & Grace
MACNAB in Aberfeldy
C 20Nov1814
Robert s Peter CAMPBELL mason otp & Grizell MACNAB his spouse; b 6Nov1814
C
18Jun1817 David s Peter CAMPBELL
flax-dresser otp & Grizzel MACNAB his spouse; b 20May1817
C
26Nov1820 Margt d Peter CAMPBELL &
Grizel MACNAB [from OPR Perth index only – not
checked on original register])
Robert & David were baptised by Wm Orme,
minister of the independent (dissenting) congregation in Perth
The 1851
census (see below) shows that there was a daughter Janet born about 1819 at Aberfeldy
The gap
between 1804 and 1814 suggests the family may have been elsewhere.; possible
other descendants include Peter bc1811 and William bc1820:
Peter bc1811 was found from the 51 and 61 census and gave his birthplace as “Nullan” (51), Blair Atholl (61). No C of Peter CAMPBELL at Blair Atholl until 1816. He married Ann McLAGGAN at Kenmore 13Dec1835 and James, b Dundee c1837 seems to be eldest son; others include Duncan, Stewart, Elisabeth, Charles, Peter. This Peter was in Perth at least until 1862/3 (last directory searched). It is possible that “Nullan” is an error for Dull and perhaps “Blair Atholl” was a mistaken Aberfeldy
William bc1820 was a tinsmith of Perth, living at 149 High St, next to Grace in 1841; he married Nancy of England (41 census) but not found in 51 census
B
15Jul1838 d 12Jul1838 Peter CAMPBELL mason 65 [b 1773]
this is
consistent with the omission of Peter from the 1841/2 directory and the naming
of Mrs Peter (Grace) CAMPBELL there in 1843
