Sarah was born in 1835 in the Hertfordshire village of Gt Hormead, the daughter of a agricultural labourer. She was still with her family in the village in 1851 aged 16,
but three years later, she married Thomas SHORT in Stepney. Most likely she came to London as a
servant. Her address at marriage was
Fashion St in Whitechapel while the man she married was a dairyman living in
nearby Grey Eagle St. After marriage, they moved to Hague St in Bethnal Green, where
Thomas continued his dairy trade, probably keeping cattle behind their house,
and selling milk around the streets. Nine children (including twins) were born
at Hague St between 1856 and 1869, but around 1866, Thomas gave up the dairy
business to work in an oil and colour shop next door to his mother's coffee
rooms Bethnal Green Rd. This was
probably because of an outbreak of cattle disease, which severely affected
the East End about this time. By 1881, Thomas and Sarah had moved to Roman Rd, where Thomas
managed a second oil and colour shop owned by the same Mr Williams who owned
the first shop in Bethnal Green. Around 1885 they moved to 460 Old Ford Rd,
but Sarah died there two years later of bronchitis aged 51. Thomas lived to 1917 aged 81 continuing as an oilman and later as a coal dealer. He died at 15 Wrights Rd Bow in 1917. |
