Thomas was born in the Hertfordshire village of Brent Pelham in 1771 and was an agricultural labourer all his life. He married Sarah FREEMAN in the next parish when he was 25 and they settled in nearby Gt.Hormead. They baptised seven children altogether, though two of them died young. In 1841, both aged 70, they were living with their youngest son and his family in Gt.Hormead. Thomas died six years later of dropsy and Sarah went to live with another son, William, and his family, still in Gt.Hormead. She died in 1851 aged 80. |

Thomas m
Sarah FREEMAN at Stocking Pelham in 1797 and lived in Hormead; death
certificate and 41 census gives a birth year of c1773; no C found at Stocking Pelham
or Gt.Hormead, but there is a suitable baptism at nearby Brent Pelham:
C
4Aug1771 Thomas s Joseph & Mary CRANWELL at Brent Pelham
Brent
Pelham is only 2.5 miles from Gt Hormead and 1 mile from Stocking Pelham and there
are good reasons which suggest that this is the correct baptism: there are no
Cranwell records at Hormead before 1801 - ie they were newcomers to the parish
at this time; a daughter of Joseph
& Mary named Phebe was baptised at Brent Pelham but also moved to
Gt.Hormead where she was buried; moreover, Thomas named one of his daughters
Phebe.
The main
problem is that there is a second baptism of Thomas to Joseph & Mary in
1784. This would normally mean that the
first Thomas had died, though there is no burial record of Thomas between 1771
and 1783. However the 61 and 71 census
returns for G.Hormead have a John CRANVILL born in Brent Pelham about
1783. There is no John CRANWELL
baptised near this time at Brent Pelham; Joseph & Mary are the only CRANWELL
parents baptising children at this time, and though they have no John, the
second Thomas was baptised close to the expected time for John's baptism. It seems likely that there was a register
error, substituting Thomas for John. I
have inspected the original register (on film) however and there is no doubt
that the entry is Thomas.
[interestingly, the IGI says that the record was altered, though I saw
no sign of that in the original]
Pending
further evidence, it will be assumed that the above interpretation is correct
as it provides an explanation for the origin of both Thomas and John who both
moved from Brent Pelham to G.Hormead along with their sister Phebe.
William-5
was baptised at Gt.Hormead in 1807 son of Thomas & Sarah; a series of baptisms
to these parents commences in 1799. These entries are the very first reference
to the CRANWELL family in the Gt Hormead register and there is no preceding
marriage. However there is a suitable
marriage of Thomas and Sarah in the next parish of Stocking Pelham only 3 miles
away. A first child was baptised there
followed by the six at Gt Hormead.
Sarah was born at Clavering which is nearer to Stocking Pelham than
Hormead and no other suitable Thomas/Sarah marriage has been found. Little doubt therefore that this is the
correct marriage:

from the
1851 census, Sarah FREEMAN was born c1770 at Clavering in Essex, but her
baptism was not found in the Clavering register, and there is no suitable
baptism in the IGI.
