7 Joseph CRANVILLE 1738->1784

spouse's records

m Mary JOHNSON 1769

Joseph CRANVILLE was baptised at Meesden in Hertfordshire in 1738 and named after his father.  He married Mary Johnson in the next parish of Brent Pelham when he was 33, and they had at least eight children born there.

Most probably he was an agricultural labourer but nothing is known of his life after the age of 46 when his last child was baptised.  Mary was buried at Brent Pelham in 1824 aged 79

BIRTH

Joseph m Mary JOHNSON at Brent Pelham in 1769 and baptised children there from 1770 to 1784.  No burial found, so no age known.  Mary's burial age gives a birth date of about 1745, so Joseph probably born around the same time but could be between 1730/50.  No suitable baptism in Brent Pelham register, though CRANWELLs were at Brent Pelham from at least 1659, and a Joseph was buried there in 1662 son of John.  The IGI has only one suitable Joseph, C in 1738 at Meesden which is only 2 miles from Brent Pelham.

The Meesden baptism is at the right time and in right place, and will be assumed to be correct pending further evidence.  The original Meesden register gives no further information:

C 22Oct1738 Joseph s Joseph CRANVILLE at Meesden

MARRIAGE

Thomas-6 was baptised at Brent Pelham in 1771 son of Joseph & Mary CRANWELL.  The baptism is preceded by a suitable marriage at Brent Pelham:

m 23Oct1769 Joseph x CRANVIL otp & Mary x JOHNSON otp; w: Susana SMAL? [S.MAN?]; Wm X SHEEN [KEEN?]

There was no other CRANWELL/CRANVILLE family in the parish at this time so little doubt that this is the correct marriage
