Joseph CRANVILLE married Dorothy about 1735 probably at Meesden
in Hertfordshire, as he spent the rest of his life in this parish. Nothing is known of his origin however
mainly because the parish registers of Meesden earlier than 1737 have not survived. He was probably an agricultural labourer. At least six children were born to Joseph and Dororthy at
Meesden between 1737 and 1751. They
were both buried there in 1773 and 1779 respectively. |

Joseph was
married probably at Meesden about 1735, and was buried there in 1773, so a
birth date of about 1710 is therefore probable. Unfortunately the Meesden registers have not survived before
1737, and no suitable baptism for Joseph has been found. Joseph CRANVILLE son of John was buried at
nearby Brent Pelham in 1662; as the father was named, this was probably the
burial of a child. A later son named
Joseph could be an ancestor of the Meesden family, but progress will be
difficult in the absence of the Meesden registers.
Joseph-7
was baptised at Meesden in 1738, son of Joseph. There are a few other baptisms to Joseph, but in 1747, the baptism
was recorded of Ann daughter of Joseph & Dorothy CRANVILLE. This suggests that Dorothy was the mother of
the other children including Joseph junior, especially as Joseph baptised a
daughter Dorothy in 1742. The marriage
of Joseph snr to Dorothy has not been found but probably took place about
1735. Unfortunately, the Meesden
registers earlier than 1737 have not survived.

close
spacing of births suggests that Hannah and Sarah are probably not daughters of
