4 Arabella DACKOMBE 1803-1832

spouse's records

m Christopher BROOKBANKS 1821

Arabella was born in 1803, and baptised at St Mary Newington in Surrey, the eldest daughter of Daniel Dackombe, a printer and freeman of the City of London.

She married Christopher Brookbanks, a baker, when she was 19 and the following year, Christopher also became a freeman of the City as a member of the Bakers Company.

For a while they lived at a baker’s shop in Seven Dials, owned by Christopher’s father.  Their first three children were baptized at nearby St Giles in the Fields but then they moved to Cannon St in the City.  Matilda was born there but died when only a few hours old.  Christopher was still a baker, but probably not at his father's shop, although this remained in business until at least 1848.

Christopher and Arabella next moved to Hampton St near the Elephant & Castle in Camberwell, not far from Arabella’s father and Christopher continued as a baker.  A son James was born, but Arabella died when he was only six months old.  She was only 28 and thus missed out on the fortune which her father inherited and bequeathed to his other children in 1843 ten years later

No record of the death of Christopher has yet been found, but his son aged 13 was with Arabella’s father in 1841, and it seems likely that Christopher also died young perhaps in 1836 or 1837

DEATH

from register of Newington St Mary SRY

B 14Jun1832 Arabella BROOKBANKS  age 28, Hampton St

no record has yet been found of the death or burial of Christopher BROOKBANKS; not found in the GRO death index 1837-1900.  His father’s will (see Richard BROOKBANKS-5) made in 1842 does not mention Christopher.  There were no BROOKBANKs in Hampton St in the 1841 census, but Christopher’s 13 year old son, Christopher Richard, was then living with his mother’s DACKOMBE family.  All this strongly suggests that Christopher died before 1841 and probably before Sep 1837 when registration started.  It may be significant that his son James was not baptised until Jun1837 when he was 5 years old.  Was this because Christopher was seriously ill or was he baptised by relations because Christopher was already dead?

The absence of mention in his father’s will of course may merely indicate a rift in the family; it is interesting that the baker’s shop at King St was still owned by Christopher’s father in 1842 but leased to someone else; why did Christopher leave his father’s shop and set up on his own in Cannon St in 1829?  His brother William emigrated to USA by 1842; it is not inconceivable that Christopher did the same leaving his family behind.  It must be noted that Christopher was not noted as deceased at the marriages of three of his children in 1849, 1850 and 1855, but was not a witness at any of them
