5 Daniel DACKOMBE 1778-1843

m Ann HARDING 1798

Daniel was born in 1778, the son of Aquilla DACKOMBE who was a prominent member and eventually the Master of the Pewterer’s Company of the City of London.  Daniel was baptised at St Ann, Blackfriars but was not destined for the same trade as his father however, and was apprenticed to a printer when he was fourteen.

Daniel married Ann Harding at Bethnal Green in 1798 two years before his apprenticeship was completed, though this was not normally allowed for an apprentice.  Perhaps this was the reason for the out-of-town marriage, but it is interesting to note that Daniel’s father had also married two years before the end of his apprenticeship and also at Bethnal Green.

Daniel and Ann baptised their first child at St Sepulchre in the City before moving south of the Thames to Newington, where eight more children were born between 1803 and 1826.

In 1812, Daniel was listed as a printer of Elliot Row in Southwark, and in 1832 at the age of 54, he inherited from a distant relative.  Ann died in 1838 and Daniel then made a lengthy will leaving his estates to his eldest son, and then to his eldest son’s eldest son etc, with annuities of £100 to the other sons and £30 to his three daughters.  For a few years, Daniel lived at Grosvenor St, Camberwell with two unmarried daughters, before he died of a stroke in 1843 aged 65.

BIRTH

Daniel’s death certificate and the 41 census shows that he was born about 1778 not in Surrey; his apprentice records shows that he was the son of Aquila DACKOMBE, and there is a suitable baptism at St Ann Blackfriars in the City of London

C 6Jan1778 Daniel  s Aquila & Arabella DACKOMBE

Daniel named his first daughter Arabella so there can be no doubt that this is the correct baptism

MARRIAGE

Arabella-4 was baptised in 1803 at Newington, daughter of Daniel & Ann DACKOMBE.  The baptism is preceded by another baptism to these parents at St Sepulchre in the City of London, and by the following marriage at Bethnal Green, St Matthew

m  4Nov1798 Daniel DACKOMBE bch otp & Ann HARDING spr otp by banns; all signed; wit: Sarah JENNINGS, Samuel AMES [frequent witness]

the correct dates and unusual name, identify this marriage with some confidence even though Daniel had not yet finished his apprenticeship. Perhaps this was the reason for the out of town marriage at Bethnal Green, but his father before him also married at Bethnal Green before the end of his apprenticeship.
