m Arabella CASTELL 1766 |

|
Aquila was born in 1746 in Aldgate, London. His father was a pewterer, and at 14 years of age, Aquila was apprenticed to learn the same trade. He completed his apprenticeship in 1768 and was admitted as a freeman of the Pewterer’s Company. Two years previously however, he had married Arabella Castell at Bethnal Green, although apprentices were not normally allowed to marry. Perhaps this explains the out of town marriage at Bethnal Green. Aquila and Arabella baptised eight children between 1768 and 1785, first at St Giles Cripplegate, then at St Ann Blackfriars, both in the City of London. Their first son however died of smallpox at the age of 2, and two other children died in infancy. In 1801 aged 54, Aquila was elected a Liveryman of the Pewterer’s Company, and in 1818, he was elected Master of the Company. He died the following year aged 72. No record of the death of his wife Arabella has yet been found |

Aquila was presented (apprenticed) in 1761 to the Pewterer’s Company of London as son of Aquila DACKOMBE. Usual age of apprenticeship was 14 years, so he should have been born about 1747. There is a suitable baptism at St Botolph Aldgate, London:
C
21Dec1746 Aquila s Aquila & Jane
DACKOMBE; High Street
The unusual names and correct date leave little room for doubting that this is the correct baptism, even though this gives Aquila’s age at marriage as only 19 and the marriage took place two years before his apprenticeship was completed, against the normal rules of apprenticeship. Perhaps this explains the marriage at the out-of-town location of Bethnal Green
Daniel-5 was baptised at St Ann Blackfriars in the City of London in 1778, son of Aquila and Arabella DACKOMBE. The baptism is preceded by a suitable marriage at Bethnal Green St Matthew:
m 31Mar1766 Aquila DACKOMBE bch otp & Arabella x
CASTELL otp; wit: James MASHEE, Sarah MASHEE
The marriage is 12 years before the baptism, but there are intervening baptisms and the unusual names leave no doubt that this is the correct marriage.
