7 Aquila DACKOMBE 1719-1783

m Jane Welle 1740

Aquila was baptised in 1719 at Marchwiel near Wrexham in North Wales, where his father had inherited the estate of Marchwiel Hall.  Aquila was a Dackombe family name.

At the age of 15, he was apprenticed to a pewterer in the City of London but married Jane Welle at the Fleet Prison in 1740 before completing his apprenticeship.  Apprentices were not supposed to marry, so this may be why they chose the Fleet.  He completed his apprenticeship in 1742, becoming a freeman of the City and their first son was baptised at St Martin in the Fields.  They then moved to Aldgate High St in the City where seven more children were born, though two of them died at an early age.  He was elected a liveryman of the Pewterer’s Company in 1746 aged 27

At the age of 41 - and probably before -  Aquila  ran into financial difficulties and was declared bankrupt.  In 1773, he had to ask for the return of his fees from the Pewterer’s Company and was struck off their register.

He died in 1783 aged 64 and was buried at St Botolph, Aldgate

BIRTH

According to the indenture of Aquila when he was apprenticed in 1734, Aquila was the son of John DACKOMBE of Wrexham in the county of Denbigh.  The normal age of apprenticeship was 14, so Aquila should have been born about 1720.    There is a suitable baptism at Marchwiel, adjacent to Wrexham; other records show a connection of the Dackombe family with the Marchwiel estate, so there is no doubt that this is correct:

MARRIAGE

Aquila-6 was baptised at St Botolph Aldgate in 1746, son of Aquila and Jane DACKOMBE; other baptisms to these parents took place at this church, but the earliest known baptism took place at St Martin in the Fields in 1742.   A suitable preceding marriage took place at the Fleet prison in 1739/40:

from Fleet Prison register transcript:

m 17Feb1739/40 Aquila DACKOMBE gent of St Martin, & Jane WELLE

The unusual name and correct place and time identify this marriage with certainty.  The reason for the marriage in the Fleet may be because Aquila had not finished his apprenticeship and was not therefore supposed to marry; another reason may be because marriage there was cheap and later records show that Aquila was short of money, borrowing money from his uncle in 1744, and later becoming bankrupt
