John was baptised at St Bride’s Fleet St in 1684, son of Robert, a gentleman, and his wife Mary. Mary, his mother, had relations living in Marchwiel Hall in Denbighshire, and as a young man, John visited or went to live there, because in 1712 aged 28 he married a local girl, Margaret Davies, in nearby Gresford. Three children were baptised in Wrexham, though two of them died young. It seems likely that John and Margaret then moved to Marchwiel Hall, as their last child Aquilla was baptised at Marchwiel church in 1719. John died aged only 44 and was buried at Marchwiel. No record of his wife’s death has been found and it is possible that she remarried in London. |

The will of
Robert DACKOMBE of the Charterhouse in London (see below) shows that he was the
uncle of Aquila-7, and hence a brother of John-8. Records of the Charterhouse show that Robert was 76 years of age
in 1760 and hence born about 1684.
There is a suitable baptism of Robert at Holborn St Andrew:
C
11Jny1684 Robert s Robert & Mary DACKOMBE gent at – Rushes in Deane St in
Fetter Lane
The
uncommon name and correct date give a good probability that this is correct;
moreover, these parents had a son named John, baptised in 1689, which gives a
suitable age of 22 for John’s marriage at Gresford. The baptism took place at St Bride’s in Fleet St, which is close
to the Fetter Lane abode of Robert and Mary
C
28Feb1688/9 John s d Robert & Mary DACKOMB
It is
known that a Robert DACKOMBE of London was involved in chancery litigation
concerning property in Marchwiel inherited and occupied by relations of his
wife (see Robert-9) and in one document testified that he was at Marchwiel in
1718. Thus it is not unreasonable that
John baptised in London son of Robert & Mary should have travelled to
Marchwiel, even before 1718, either with his parents or to join his mother’s
relations there.
Aquilla-7 was baptised at Marchwiel, Denbighshie in 1719, son of John & Margaret. There is a suitable preceding marriage at nearby Gresford:

the marriage bond has not been seen

Wrexham Abbot
B
27Sep1715 Edward DACOMB s Mr John of Wrexham Abbot
B 27Sep1717
Robt DYCOMB s Mr Jon
it seems
probable that the baptism of Robert son of Robert is an error either in the
transcript or in the original and should be son of John, as the baptism is
followed by the burial of Robert son of John just 12 days later; errors of this
type (repeating the child’s name in the parent’s place) are not unknown. John did have a brother Robert, but no
records of his marriage or of any other baptisms have been found
C
13Sep1719 Aquila s John & Margaret DACCOMB
In 1735, John’s son Aquila was apprenticed in London; the indenture notes that his father was deceased. There is a suitable entry in the Marchwiel register:
B
17Mar1727/8 John DEACHAM
No other
entries of this name were seen in the register, so is almost certainly a
variation of Dackombe. No record of a
will was found at the National Library of Wales.
No burial
of Margaret was seen. There was a
marriage of Margaret DACOMBE in London St George Mayfair in 1753 (one year
before Hardwicke’s marriage act stopped the irregular marriages there):
m
11Mar1753 John CLEMENT & Margaret DACOMBE of St James Westminster
If this
were John’s widow she would have been aged at least 64 at remarriage; no
children of John & Margaret can be identified in the IGI

C 15Nov1690 Margarett d Matthew DAVIES, gardiner of Wrexham
these are the only suitable baptisms, but no evidence which, if any, is correct; the second baptism is perhaps most likely since after marriage, John and Margaret were of Wrexham Abbot, and this date of birth has been assumed in the above table
