[1] Date of birth given by the inquisition post
mortem after his grandfather’s death
[2] Thomas had an unremarkable career as
rector of St Peter Colebrook Winchester and of Tarrant Gunville DOR
(1549-c1572), but made a remarkable collection of books and manuscripts (“A
Sixteenth-Century Collector: Thomas Dackomb” by Andrew Watson, The Library 1963
series 5 vol 18(3) pp204-217). His date
of birth17Jan1495/6 comes from his own inscription in one of his books
[3] Ann was probably the daughter of William
Hartgill of Kilmington though not mentioned in his will. William was murdered
by Baron Charles Stourton in 1557 but some years earlier, John Dackombe
(probably John-13) was involved in the dispute between Stourton and Hartgill as
a Justice of the Peace. He was attacked
by Stourton “and put in fear of his life” (TNA Star Chamber STAC3 Ed6 4/5)
[4] The marriage of Elizabeth ASHLEY (dau of
Henry of Wimborne St Giles DOR) to George PERCY and then to William Daccombe is
given both in the Ashley and Daccombe pedigrees in the 1565 Visitation of
Dorset. At this time he was of Rushton
(a few miles west of Wareham in Dorset) and this is confirmed in a chancery
suite in which William sued his brother John over property rents including the
manor of Hanforde (Nat Arch C3 54/45 1558-1579). A few years earlier (1556 or 1557) however in a complaint heard
in the Court of Star Chamber (Nat.Arch.STAC4 2/59) he was of Mere in
Wiltshire; he was accused by Jane STOURTON widow of seizing hay from the manor
of Rushton.
[5] In “The Complete Peerage” 1910 p 342,
doubt is expressed that the marriage with Lord Audley ever took place; however
a chancery bill by his son George confirms the marriage (Nat.Archives C3 5/15
Lord George Audley v John Daccombe and others)
[6] Joan is not mentioned in
father’s will, but is named in both visitations. Her marriage is confirmed by
chancery document (C3 43/61), abstracted as follows:
Richard Cheke v John Dackombe 21Jan???? concerning marriage contract of Johane Dukom deceased, daughter of John Dukom of Steepleton. Thomas CHUFFYN gent deceased took Johane Dukom to wife for £60. £30 was paid and Thomas Chuffyn left the remaining £30 to his wife in his will. John Dackomb's son John is now sued for remaining £30 by executor of will of Thomas Chuffyn's son. John Dackombe the younger has got hold of Thomas Chuffyn's will by casual means and will not pay.
C3 class is dated 1558-1579, but date
on document unreadable. It seems likely
therefore that Joan died before her father’s will was made in 1562
[7] From John-13s will, all the children were
born before 1562. From a deposition in
the Nat Archives (C21 D30/9), William was born c1556. He was the second son, so James (who was married before
1571) was born around 1550 and Robert
around 1560 and their parents married around 1550. From various wills, the girls were born after 1542 and married
between 1571 and 1585. Middle values of 1555 and and 1580 have been used as
approximate indications.
[8] The marriage of James to Elizabeth
Willoughby is confirmed from the Willoughby pedigree in the Visitation of
Wiltshire in 1623
Will of Robert Frampton of
Moreton DOR esq, proved 1596: …to my daughter Elizabeth DACKOMBE and her
husband William DACKOMBE…
Will of John
Ashecombe of Steepleton proved 1598: …to my cousin Elizabeth DACKOMBE the
elder £20; to my cousin James DACKOMBE £10; he and his wife Elizabeth joint executors;
to my cousin Elizabeth DACKOMBE the younger £40; to my cousin William DACKOMBE
the younger, all my guns etc…
Robert Dackombe vicar of Horton was promised James’ library of books “worth £100” in his will, but had to sue John STRODE to get them (SDN&Q vol16 121)
[9] The marriage at Iwerne Courtney has been variously transcribed as COLSDON/ COSSDEY/COBSDON, but Elizabeth’s name was probably COLTHURST. The 1604 will of Ann HIDE of West Hatch WIL mentions her daughter Elizabeth DACKOMBE. She also mentions her son Mathew COLTHURST and according to the 1623 Visitation of Dorset she was born Ann SYBIL and formerly married to Matthew COLTHURST of Wardour. Her will mentions numerous grandchildren by name, but none of them are Dackombe’s so it is likely that Elizabeth and William had no issue.
[10] The story of Robert Dackombe can be told
from from the wills of himself and his two wives, and from suits in the Court
of Requests (full abstracts in a separate file). Robert bought Benwall in Shropshire from
his brother-in-law Henry Evans (married to Sybil Dackombe). Henry Evans was in some financial
difficulties at the time and Robert seems to have taken advantage. Robert wanted the property to impress
Silvester Cottington of Leigh under Mendipp in Somerset, a woman of “great
wealth” and kinswoman of Henry Evans.
The scheme worked as he married her about 1592, though Silvester’s
brother claimed that she was “betrayed away and married aginst the goodwill and
liking of her brethren and friends”.
Robert does not appear in a good light, for within a year, he sued one
of Silvester’s relations over £5 of her money which she had lent before she was
married! And then Silvester died the following year leaving all to Robert. Silvester’s mother had purchased the rectory
of Shipton Montacute for her daughter, but Robert did not part up with it. He remarried Jane and had two daughters both
of whom married and had children. His
son Robert, christened in 1599, was not mentioned in the wills of either parent
and presumably died young. Robert was
of Iford in Wiltshire [not yet identified] before moving to Benwall and then to
Glazely (5 miles S of Astley Abbotts) but is identified unambiguously with
Robert born in Steepleton because of the relationships mentioned in the
documents.
[11] Henry GANE/GAWEN first married Anne BAYLIE and had a daughter Elizabeth. Anne died after the birth and Henry remarried Anne Dackombe. Henry died intestate and the property of his first wife came to Anne Dackombe much to the annoyance of his first wife’s family, who sued in the Court of Requests for the property to go to the daughter Elizabeth:
Bill by John SEAMER gent, on behalf of Elizabeth GAWEN infant, plaintiffs sister’s daughter. Anne Baylie, sister to pf and mother of Elizabeth, was seised of lands in Tatton Dorset. Henry Gawen took to wife Anne Baylie. Elizabeth HANNAM widow, mother of pf, demised lands in Eddbeare and Marnhull Dorset to Henry and Anne. Anne died after giving birth to Elizabeth. Henry Gawen married Anne Dackombe and died intestate. The lands came to Anne Dackombe which should have come to Elizabeth. Anne married John GERRARD; Date on Reverse: 21Oct30Eliz[1588]
Answer by John Gerrard and Anne
his wife. November 31Eliz[1589]. Sets it all out again. Writings in safe keeping of James Dackombe.
Claims Elizabeth has been well provided.
Nat. Archives REQ2 267/14 1588
[12] In 1593,
William Dackombe was a witness in a suit brought by his brother Robert, and was
then “aged 38 years or thereabouts” thus giving him a birth date of c1555
[Nat.Arch C21 D30/9]. In 1596 a William
Daccombe of Chardstock gent aged 40 was a witness in another chancery suit
[Nat.Arch. C21 D26/10] and his presence in Chardstock is confirmed by the tudor
subsidy of 1594. Since this William was
also bc1556 it seems probable that they are the same person; the Chardstock
register survives from 1587 but contains no Dackombe entries
