2. A foot of fine (PRO CP25/2 257/66/41) shows that a Henry Daccombe and his wife Christian sold property near Warminster, Wiltshire in 1504. It is abstracted in a volume of Wiltshire Feet of Fines ed J.K.Kirby:
“1504 Oct of Trinity. (Made quin of Hilary) plaintiffs Richard Elyot, serjeant at law, John Mompesson, John Marvyn and Robert Boweryng v Henry Daccombe and Christian his wife, defendants. 16 messuages, 1 dovecote, 110a land, 9a meadow, 30a pasture in Warminster, Tytherington and Chitterne. Right of Robert, plaintiff, by gift of defendant; remise and quitclaim to plaintiff. (Warranty against John Abbot of St Peters, Westminster, and his successors). Fine £40”
In the VCH for Warminster in Wiltshire it is
suggested that Christian Daccombe was the daughter of Roger Newburgh. This seems unlikely for the following
reasons:
1)
Hutchins describes a marriage contract of 1510 between Christian (sole
heiress of Roger Newburgh) and John, Lord Marney, by which extensive Newburgh
estates were conveyed to the Marney family.
Christian died in 1517 before the death of Marney. So if this Christian
were the wife of Henry Daccombe, this must have been a former marriage, and
Henry must have died before 1510 (the Henry left 20 sheep in Thomas’ will was
still alive in 1514). Hutchins makes no mention of a former marriage.
2)
Roger Newburgh’s will dated 1515 makes no mention of any Dackombe. His daughter Christian and Sir John Marny
named as executors.
3)
VCH assumes that the land sold by Henry and Christian Daccombe in 1504
was formerly held by Roger Newburgh, but the foot of fine shows that the
Daccombe land was at Warminster, Titherington and Chitterne (150a total),
whereas the land held by Roger Newburgh mentioned in 1493 was at Bishopstrowe
and Buggeley, with a fishery in Warminster.
Christian Cutting, widow of John Cutting, held land
in Warminster, Buggelegh, Bishopstrowe, Chilhampton, Newton Bruddecombe
(Burcombe?), Carlton (Wilton?) and Fonleston (c1442?). The ownership was disputed by John Newborough,
(Roger's grandfather and heir to John Cutting), but the outcome of the dispute
is not known (Early Chancery Proceedings C1 14/31). Possibly some of the
Warminster land remained in the Cutting family, and descended to a
granddaughter, named Christian after her grandmother.
At present it seems more likely that Henry
married Christian MORGAN (see notes on descendants of John-15). No information has been found concerning the
Baynpinne/Bampine family said in the Visitations of Dorset to be married to Christian,
sister of Henry. No other reference to Baynpynne has been found, which raises the
possibility that the Christian of the Visitations was a sister-in-law married
to brother Henry rather than a sister.
Other information constrains the date of
death of John of Fyshtoft to about 1540 and the date of his marriage to1530 or
earlier, which is consistent with the marriage date of his proposed parents
Henry & Christian c1504:-
Alice Gibthorpe, widow
of John DACOMBE of Fishtoft, married secondly William MANBY and by him had an
eldest son aged 35 in 1574, so born c1539 (from the pedigree of the MANBY
family published in Lincolnshire pedigrees).
Thus John of Fishtoft must have died before 1539. But John of Fishtoft had a son Henry who died
2Dec1571, and an inquisition post mortem held at Sleaford in 1574 noted that
Henry had a brother William aged 30 in 1571, so born 1541. Clearly these dates are inconsistent, since
if John died before 1539 he could not have a son born in 1541. Both dates are derived from ages in inq.
post mortem which are not necessarily absolutely accurate. But an error of just one year in both cases,
would constrain the date of John’s death to about 1540. The Lincolnshire pedigree notes that John
had 5 children. So if the last of these
was born about 1540, then he is likely to have been married around 1530 or
earlier, and so born 1510 or earlier, which is consistent with the marriage date
of his proposed parents Henry and Christian c1504. The earliest reference to Dackombe in Fishtoft found so far is in
1528 when Master Dackombe of Fishtoft was appointed overseer of the will of
Richard Browne of Fishtoft [Lincoln wills 1271-1532]
7. The daughters of William and Benedicta are deduced from baptisms and marriages in the parish register of Coleby:
C 29May1575 Elizabeth DACKHAM
B 16Apr1578 Elizabeth DACKHAM
C 9Dec1581
Katherine DACKHAM
m 15Apr1595 Samuel BUSHIE & Jane DACKHAM
m 15Apr1595 Thomas LIPPETRAT & Anne DACKHAM
The parents at the baptisms are not stated, but the Dackham surname is almost non-existenet in this county and there can be no doubt they are William and Benedicta. The register commenced in 1561 so it is possible that Jane and Anne were baptised elsewhere, perhaps in Huntingdon, before William moved to Coleby. A marriage of Henry Dycam or Dockam to Margaret Metcalf was recorded at St Peter at the Arches, Lincoln on 1Sep1591. It is unlikely that he was the son of Henry of Huntingdon otherwise he would have been noted as his heir in the ipm. On 2Jul1604 Margaret Dackam married George Bent at St Swithin, Lincoln. Possibly she was another daughter of William, but it seems more likely that she was the widow of Henry as shown in the tree. No descendants of Henry and Margaret are known.
The
date of Bryan’s birth is uncertain. His son Henry had a daughter, Elizabeth,
who married in 1609 and had three children before remarriage and the birth of a
fourth child before 1623. This suggests
she was not more than 30 at first marriage, ie born between about 1580 and
1590. Henry’s will was proved in 1615; assuming an age at death no more than
75, and an age of at least 25 when his daughter Elizabeth was born, Henry would
have been born after 1540 and before 1565.
Assuming Bryan was no younger than 25 and no older than 40 at the birth
of his son Henry, then he could have been born between 1500 and 1540. Even these wide margins do not cover less
probable, but not impossible, situations.
The point of these calculations is to
determine whether Bryan could have been the son of Henry and Christian. It is suggested in the tree above that they married
c1504, which is clearly consistent with the likely range of dates for the birth
of Bryan. Just as illustration, Bryan
could have been born c1510, married c1540 with son Henry born shortly after.
9.
There is no information concerning Bryan’s wife’s name, but a Katherine
Dacombe widow was buried at Winterbourne Kingston 25Mar1597/8 and may have been
the widow of Bryan. This is consistent
- but only just - with a suggested marriage date of 1540 (age 20 at marriage,
78 at death),
10.
Henry’s will (summarised below, fuller version in a separate file),
naming his children and place of residence, identifies this Henry as the Henry,
son of Bryan, in the 1623 Visitation of Dorset, though his wife’s name is Anne
in the will, and Agnes, daughter of Robson of Shaftesbury, in the
Visitation. The will was made in 1610
before the births of his grandchildren, and he left the residue of his estate
to John son of Francis if no grandchildren were born. Francis was the grandson of John and Joan as shown in the tree
above and so was 2nd cousin to Henry if the tree is correct. Francis was of the manor of Kingston Lacy
in the parish of Wimborne Minster only 7 miles from Winterbourne Kingston. So it is to be expected that the 2nd
cousins would have been well known to each other; geographically the Corfe
Castle branch was much further away and the Steepleton branch was about 10
miles from Kingston Lacy. It is
possible that the Winterbourne Kingston and Kingston Lacy families were more
closely related. If for example, Bryan were a son of John and Joan, rather than
a son of Henry, then Francis and Henry would be 1st cousins; failing
other evidence however, the arrangement above is retained at present.
