Helen Dingwall, often recorded as Ellen, was born in or near Perth, probably in Bridgend just across the river from the city. She remained there until about the age of 12, but then her parents moved first to Stirling then to Glasgow. Helen’s mother died at Stirling when Helen was 13. By the following year (1853) Helen was in service. She became a domestic servant living at 14 Commercial Rd in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, and at the age of 19 married David JUSTICE who lived next door at no.15. The ceremony was at 15 Abbotsford Place, Gorbals, which may have been her father's address. David was an apprentice turner (lathe operator), but within two years he became a ship's engineer and began sea voyages to Europe and Canada from Glasgow. A son and two daughters were baptised in Glasgow Hutchesontown, where her address in 1862 was 103 Rose Street - the next street to Commercial St where her husband's parents still lived. In 1866, David began sailing from London, and two years later, Helen moved with her family to Shadwell and then to Poplar near the docks in London's East End. Two more daughters were born in London. David died in 1904, but Helen lived to 1920. Her two elder daughters married marine engineers, but the eldest, Christina, died in 1917. Her two younger daughters married schoolteachers. Helen died in 1920 at High St, East Ham, leaving everything (£880) to her second daughter Helen who by then had re-married Frederick GOODALL. |

From her m
and d certificate and census, Helen was born c1839. From the m details she was
the d of William DINGWALL and Christina CAMPBELL and there is a couple of these
names who married in Scone near Perth and baptised 2 children at nearby Kinnoul
in 1829 and 1831. There is no C of
(H)elen in the OPR index but the 1841 census has this family at Kinnoull with
Helen aged 5.
Since
Kinnoul is just across the river from Perth, there is no doubt that these are
the correct parents, though the age in the 41 census should be 2 or 3 not 5.
Helen was
therefore born around 1839 at Kinnoul (Bridgend) or Perth, but her baptism has
not been found. It seems likely that
she was baptised in a church other than the Church of Scotland
