4 William DINGWALL 1805-1873

spouse's records

m Christina CAMPBELL 1827

William DINGWALL was born in Glasgow in 1805, eldest surviving son of Roderick & Helen, who eventually had 16 children.  When he was only 3 however, the family moved to Scone in Perthshire and then to Bridgend, just across the river from the City of Perth.

In 1827 when he was 21, William married  Christina CAMPBELL at Scone, and became a wright at Bridgend like his father.  In 1841 they were living there with four daughters, and in 1843 the Perth directory listed him as a chair-maker.

At this time however, William's mother burnt to death and his father drowned himself three years later.   Another daughter was born in 1847 but the family then left Perth for Auchterarder (2 months), Alloa (1 year) then lived in Stirling for three years.  Here William continued his trade as a chair-maker, but his wife Christina died aged only 44.

William then went to Glasgow where he applied for poor relief in 1853 because of ill health.  He was alone, his daughters were in service or married, Mary the youngest was living with her married sister Margaret in Stirling.

In 1858 he was a builder when his daughter Helen married in Glasgow and in 1861 he went to England for 3 years where he was a builder of greenhouses.  He returned to Glasgow in 1864 and again sought poor relief because of rheumatism.  He was in the City poorhouse at various times in 1865 and 1866 and died there in 1873 from bronchitis, aged 68.

William DINGWALL  lo wdr 47 1814 designer and builder of greenhouses   Scotland

At first sight, this seems unlikely to be William Dingwall-4.  However no other suitable William Dingwall was found in 1861 census and an error of 7 years in age is not conclusive negative evidence.  Moreover William-4 was a widower and his application for poor relief in 1865 states that he was in England from 1861 to 1864.  He was a joiner and in 1858 was a builder, so greenhouse building was not beyond his capability.  No William Dingwall b1814, builder of greenhouses has been found in any other census and it is concluded that this is William-4.

1871 not found; probably in Glasgow, but not at known addresses nor in the poor house
