Roderick was born in 1773 in Beladrum in the parish of Kiltarlity near Inverness. He left his home town as a young man and married Helen Bain in Glasgow in 1802. Roderick was then a wright (carpenter) Four sons were born in Glasgow but the first two died young. The family then moved to Perthshire in 1807 or 08 where Roderick was employed as a carpenter by the Earl of Mansfield. The new Scone Palace was completed in 1808 and possibly Roderick obtained his position as completion of the Palace became urgent. Roderick and Helen had a further twelve children. The first two were baptised at Scone, the village close to the Palace, but between 1812 and 1826, Roderick and Helen lived at Bridgend. This village is just across the river from the City of Perth but still only two miles from Scone palace. They baptised all but one of their children at Kinnoul church which is in Bridgend. In 1827, their eldest son William married and, like his father, became a wright at Bridgend. Perhaps because of this, Roderick and Helen moved back to New Scone where their last two children were baptised. Roderick remained a carpenter for the Earl of Mansfield until his death. In 1843 however, Helen aged 65 died after her clothes caught fire. Roderick moved down the hill to Old Scone, and three years later, drowned in a nearby pond. He was 73 and it was said that he was despondent since the death of his wife and probably took his own life. He was buried in Greyfriars cemetery, Perth. |

Roderick’s
burial record gives a birth between Jun1771 and Jun1772 in Ross-shire; the 41
census does not appear to have been rounded down and gives a birth date between
Apr1773 and Apr1774 outwith Perth; the agreement is good and suggests a birth
about 1772/3 in Ross-shire. There is
however no suitable baptism in the OPR index, and only 3 between 1760 and 1785
in all Scotland:
C
16Jul1761 s John DINGWALL Kiltearn, Ross And Cromarty
C 19Jne1778
s Alexander DINGWALL & Margaret FRASER Kiltarlity, Inverness
C 5Oct1781 s John DINGWALL, Fodderty, Ross And
Cromarty
there is
however a baptism at a suitable date of Rory DINGWALL at Kiltarlity,
Inverness:
C 8Aug1773 Rory s Thomas DINGWALL in Milltown
of Balladrum; w:John DINGWALL, Alex{?} McDONALD in Rivalking
this is interesting
because the date is right, Kiltarlity is close to Ross border, and Thomas
was the name of Roderick's second son. The
first son was named William, but it seems likely that William was named after
his wife's father as a William BAIN was a witness to William's baptism.
The entry in the Kiltarlity register is undoubtedly Rory, not Rodk,
but Rory and Roderick are considered equivalent names in the Sasine register
index for Invernesss. Moreover, Thomas’ father was named Roderick
(see Thomas Dingwall-6). The place of Roderick's birth in the burial
register would probably have been given by Roderick's son, who may not have
known exact place of birth, or it was assumed to be near Dingwall in Ross-shire.
Thomas also had a son John in 1780 which supports
the proposition that he was the father of Roderick. A John Dingwall married Jean Taylor at Fintry
in 1803, and a relationship with this family is highly probable because one
of the grandchildren of John & Jean moved to London and gave a home to
the husband of one of Rodericks grand-daughters when he was also in London. (see tree T-5)
On the other hand, there are several parishes
nearby where DINGWALL is a common surname (eg Dingwall, Fodderty, Urquhart
& Logie Wester and Tain in Ross; Inverness in Inverness) and Roderick/Rory
is a not uncommon forename. Almost
certainly Roderick comes from this part of the world; circumstantial evidence
is strong that Kiltarlity is the correct baptism, but further confirmation is
desirable.
William-4
was baptised 1805 in Glasgow, son of Roderick and Helen BAIN; there is a

Woman
Burned. On Friday afternoon last week,
a respectable woman and mother of a family, residing in New Scone, accidentally
slipped a foot and fell over the fire, and before she could recover herself her
clothes became ignited and in a few seconds she was in a blaze from head to
foot. Her cries brought the neighbours
to her assistance who succeeded in extinguishing the flames, but not before the
poor woman was so dreadfully burned that she had to be immediately conveyed to
the Perth Infirmary where we hear little hopes are entertained for her recovery
"Death
by drowning". Early on Sunday
morning an elderly man, who had been in the employment of the Earl of
Mansfield, as a carpenter, for more than thirty five years, was found in a pond
or lake near Old Balbughty. It is not
exactly known how he came by his death, but as he was in a desponding way, and
he had been ever since the death of his wife, by her clothes taking fire, about
two years ago, suspicions are entertained that it was his own act.
