BIRTH

 

The eldest known children of Roderick were named Margaret and Thomas, baptised 1743 and 1746 in Kiltarlity.  Possibly however there were earlier children born elsewhere before 1743, the first date that Roderick is recorded in the Kiltality register, both as a parent and as a witness.  So Roderick was probably born around 1700/1720, possibly son of Thomas or Margaret.  The OPR index has the following possibilities:

Perhaps the most probable baptism then is to John and Margaret at Dingwall, some 10 miles north of Kiltarlity.  Tain is another 20 miles further north, while Inverness is about 15 miles south of Kiltarlity.  Presumably the Rodrick baptised there in 1722 died, and the baptism in December 1724 is almost too late.

John and Margaret baptised the following children at Dingwall:

From the discussion below, it is likely that Roderick of Kiltarlity had a brother John, who might well be the John baptised 1696 son of John and Margaret though he named his eldest son Alexander.

 

Sasine records reveal a Dingwall family at Ussie about 9 miles from Kiltarlity.  In 1707, Roderick Dingwall of Ussie son of Alexander, was husband of Jean Dingwall, son of Roderick Dingwall of Cambuscarrie.  This Roderick was married too early to be Roderick-7.  Clearly however, Roderick Dingwall is a not uncommon name in the vicinity of the town of Dingwall, and without further evidence no conclusion can yet be reached.

MARRIAGE

 

from the register of Kiltarlity, Roderick seems to have arrived in Kiltarlity around 1743 and lived to at least 1775 (see descendants); a marriage around 1730/40 may be surmised but has not been found in the OPR index.  If the Ussie sasine is relevant, then Roderick’s wife might have been mary McRAE

The parish register of Kiltarlity has only two baptisms to Roderick, though the register seems complete from at least 1730

baptising children at the same time was John DINGWALL; he was a weaver, but also at Milntown of Belladrum, and was possibly Roderick’s brother:
