Elizabeth was born in Terling in 1751 and married Samuel WENDON there when she was 34. Samuel was a widower whose first wife had died only 4 months previously. Just 3 months later they were destitute, and Elizabeth, Samuel, and Samuel's sole surviving child by his first wife (Samuel aged 5) were ordered by the Terling overseers of the poor to be removed to the nearby parish of Witham, Samuel's birthplace. The following year they baptised a son William at Witham. A year later in 1787, they were at Fairsted (adjacent to Terling) where a second son, Matthew, was baptised; and by 1790 they were back in Terling where two sons and two daughters were born. Both daughters died young as did one of the sons. Elizabeth remained at Terling until she died in 1824. They had escaped from poverty since Samuel was not listed in the 1809 return of the poor, and was listed in "trade" (probably weaving) in the census of 1801 and in agriculture in 1809 and 1811. One son was still living with them in 1809, but by 1811, Elizabeth and Samuel were on their own. Elizabeth was buried at Terling in 1824 aged 73. |

Elizabeth
m Samuel WENDON in Terling in 1785; there is only one suitable C of Elizabeth DUDLEY at Terling:
C 21Oct751 B 10Oct751 Eliz d Ric & Eliz DUDLEY at Terling
Although
this means that she was aged 34 at marriage, there is a burial of Elizabeth
WENDON at Terling in 1824 age
73, which gives a birth date of 1751.
Samuel was a widower married previously in 1778 so also above normal
age of first marriage. There is little doubt therefore that this is the correct baptism.
Matthew WENDON-4 was C at Fairstead, son of Samuel & Elizabeth, in 1787; there is no suitable m at Fairstead, but Samuel WENDON married Elizabeth DUDLEY in the neighbouring parish of Terling in 1785:
m 12Jul1785 Saml WENDON wdr of Terling & Eliz DUDLEY spr of Terling
Since DUDLEY was used as a christian name by Martha Anne-3 for one of her children, and also for my brother David, there is little doubt that this is the correct marriage.
