Richard lived all his known life at Terling. He was baptised there in 1718 and became a blacksmith. When he was 30, he obtained a marriage licence to marry Elizabeth OSBORN at nearby Boreham parish. A record of the marriage has not been found but it seems that it took place, since in the following years, Richard and Elizabeth DUDLEY baptised three children at Terling – Mary Elizabeth and William. Richard was buried at Terling aged 47, but his widow outlived him by 25 years. |

From the
1748 marriage licence, Richard was of Terling, aged 28 so born about 1720. There is a suitable C at Terling in 1718,
giving an actual age of 30 at marriage:
C 16Mar1718 B 2Mar1718 Richard s Richard & Mary DUDLEY
Richard's
first child was named Mary, so the evidence in favour of this baptism is firm.
Elizabeth
DUDLEY-5 was born in 1751, daughter of Richard & Elizabeth; no suitable m
of Richard to Elizabeth has been
found and is not in the Essex m index.
However, a marriage licence was issued in 1748 to Richard DUDLEY of
Terling and Elizabeth OSBORN
to marry at the nearby parish of Boreham:
12Jun1748
Richard DUDLY single of Terling, blacksmith, 28 & Elizabeth OSBORN single
28, to marry at Boreham
bond:George x DUDLY of Terling,
dishturner [George is brother of Richard]
Richard
& Elizabeth DUDLEY baptised their first child 15 months later, and it is
assumed therefore that the marriage
did take place, though the record has not been found. Further confirmation is given by the 1775 Terling census in which a widowed
Elizabeth DUDLEY was staying with a Thomas CURTIS; if Elizabeth was formerly OSBORN, then Thomas CURTIS
(who married Mary OSBORN) was her brother-in-law.

this
probably refers to Richard-6 giving an age of 47 at death; however Richard-7
was m 1709 and so if he were aged
20 at marriage, he would have been aged 76 at this burial, so cannot be
excluded. Only one Richard burial
found in register. Richard died before 1775 since Elizabeth was
then a widow in the census
B 16Jun1790 Eliz DUDLEY
there is
no other Elizabeth in the Terling register to suit this burial; (the Elizabeth of Ric and Mary was buried as a child)
There is
no Richard DUDLEY in the Terling parish census of 1775 or 1778, supporting the
burial of Richard in 1765. Moreover there is a widow Elizabeth
DUDLEY with a Thomas CURTIS in the 1775 census and 1778 census:
5May1775 by Mr Chipperfields; Elizabeth DUDLEY, widow, with Thomas CURTIS
7Jul1778 Mill St; Elizabeth DUDLEY, widow
