Richard began the DUDLEY line at Terling, his marriage to Mary BROMLEY in 1709 being the first Dudley record in the parish. They baptised 8 children altogether, but at least 4 died young. One of their sons was a blacksmith so it is possible that Richard was too, as this trade often stayed in the family. At present, Richard's parish of origin is not known, neither has his burial been identified. His wife Mary was probably buried at Terling in 1761 There is a family legend that the DUDLEYs descended from an illegitimate child of the “Earl of Dudley”. Possibly this refers to Robert DUDLEY, Earl of Leicester favourite of Queen Elizabeth, since there is a tenuous connection between Terling and the Earl: chancellor Thomas AUDLEY (of Audley End 20 miles from Terling) had a daughter Mary baptised at Terling c1541; her sister Margaret, born c1540, married Henry DUDLEY, brother of the Earl. She was only 14 and when Henry died 3 years later, she married Thomas 4th Duke of Norfolk the same year. But this is all 150 years before birth of Richard and it seems unlikely that an illegitimate child would take the DUDLEY surname! The curious similarity of DUDLEY and AUDLEY in writing might prove interesting. |

The Dudley name is not common in Essex and the registers of most parishes in which DUDLEY references occur have been examined, but Richard's baptism has not been found. Peter DUDLEY was a yeoman of Danbury in 1577 but surviving Danbury registers start at 1673. No Terling manorial records have been found to indicate his origin. The IGI has many DUDLEYs in the vicinity of Dudley, Staffordshire; apart from these the following Richard DUDLEYs were C between 1670 and 1690:
C 12Mar1670 s Richard & Elizabeth DUDLEY at Thurlaston, Leicester
C 23Jun1679 s Edward & Mary DUDLEY at St Botolph Bishopsgate, London
C 14Jny1691 s John & Mary DUDLEY at Stepney St Dunstan MDX
there was a Richard DUDLEY C at Norwich in 1609
John AUDLEY m Sarah FREEMAN 18Sep1683 at Wimbish ESS
(15miles from Terling)
Richard-6 was baptised at Terling in 1718, son of Richard & Mary; several baptisms to these parents are preceded by the following marriage at Terling:
m 26Apr1709 Ric DUDLEY & Mary BROMLEY
C 26Feb1710 Edw s Ric & Mary DUDLEY
C 23Apr1711 b14Apr1711 Eliz d Ric & Mary DUDLEY; B 20Oct1712 Eliza DUDLEY infant

There is only one possible Richard burial recorded at Terling:
B 25Apr1765 Ric DUDLEY
if Richard m at age 21 then he would have been 77 at this time. For reasons discussed in DUDL-B6, however this burial is considered more likely to refer to Richard's son aged 47 than to Richard-7. There are no DUDLEY burials at Terling between 1725 and 1751 but the original registers do not seem to be deficient for this period
there is only one suitable burial of Mary at Terling:
B 4May1761 Mary DUDLEY
but this record could refer to either of two Mary DUDLEYs both born in 1749 so aged 12 at burial; these might have been noted as "child" in the register, but this is not certain. If the record refers to Richard's wife, she was aged about 73 at burial
