John EVANS married and died in the small Hampshire village of Froyle, but was not baptised there. At present it is believed that he was born at Upton near Slough in 1739, as family links with this area continued for the next 100 years. Only two children of John are known, James and Sarah, both baptised at Froyle. James became a wine merchant of Slough. Sarah married a farmer in Guildford; her son was apprenticed in Slough and her granddaughter was born in Upton in 1838. John’s trade is unknown as is the reason for moving 25 miles from Upton to Froyle. John was buried in Froyle churchyard in 1819, and his son James was buried in the same grave, where their gravestone still stands |

John was buried in 1819 aged 79 or 80, giving a birth year of about 1740 consistent with a marriage in 1770. He married and died in Froyle, but there is no baptism there, and very few EVANS records at all. EVANS are found in neighbouring villages such as Bentley, but no systematic search has yet been made for his baptism. The IGI for Hampshire has a few John EVANS baptised around 1740, eg 3Jan1741 at Abbotts Ann son of Richard & Sarah, but this parish is some 25 miles from Froyle and not main road connected.
There are many connectrions between this EVANS family and the Slough/Eton/Windsor area of Bucks:
1) John’s son James EVANS was a wine merchant of Slough when he was buried at Froyle in 1835
2) John’s daughter Sarah EVANS was at Old Windsor in 1871 after her husband died, with her married son Frederick
3) Sarah’s son James SMITHERS was apprenticed as a carpenter in Slough from 1830 to 1837; he was overseer of the poor and licensee of the Nag’s Head in Bray 1845-6
4) Sarah’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Evans SMITHERS, was born in Upton near Slough in 1838
The IGI for Bucks has a John EVANS baptised at Upton cum Chalvey 23Mar1739 son of William & Jane. This is the same Upton, a mile from Slough, where Elizabeth Evans SMITHERS was born a century later.
This is surely not a coincidence. From IGI, William and Jane BAILY were married at Upton 13Feb1727. They baptised 7 children there Jane 7Apr1728, William 19Mar1731, Mary 23Nov1735, John 23Mar1739, Elisabeth and Rachel 13Feb1742, Anne 28Jan1749. The IGI also shows a continuing EVANS presence at Eton or Upton into the next century. Eg the William b1731 at Upton married Elizabeth LOVELL 9Nov1756 at Eton and baptised children at Eton
Pending examination of the original registers of Upton and Eton, the following baptism will form a working hypothesis:
C 23Mar1739 John s William & Jane EVANS at Upton cum Chalvey
Sarah was baptised in 1780 at Froyle Hants, daughter of John & Elizabeth EVANS. One other baptism to these parents was found at Froyle in 1773, and this was preceded by the following marriage in the same parish:

extract from affidavit in Worplesdon register shows that in
