[1] Martha GLAZIER was godmother to James
S SMITHERS, son of James SMITHER & Sarah EVANS, at his baptism in
1816. It seems significant therefore
that in the 1851 census for Worplesdon, the widow Martha MERCER (formerly
GLAZIER) was living with a grandson Charles EVANS born 1844 at Kingston.
The Kingston parish register has
his baptism 28Jan1844 son of Charles & Ann EVANS. His birth certificate however shows that he was born 2Dec1843 at
Hampton Wick illegitimate son of Ann EVANS and named Charles Mercer. It seems certain that his father was a son
of Joseph & Martha, perhaps Charles, C17Oct1819 at Worplesdon. Significantly however there was a Frederick
MERCER 40 living at Hampton Wick in 1851, born Worplesdon. He was baptised 4Feb1810 son of Joseph &
Mary (which is almost certainly an error for Martha).
It is concluded that there is not
necessarily any connection between Ann EVANS and Sarah EVANS of Froyle
[2] Joseph EVANS was buried at Worplesdon
on 1875 aged 26 which gives him a birth date of about 1849; there are almost no
other EVANS records at Worplesdon, and the name Joseph suggests his place here
on the tree
