4 Isabel GRANT 1820?-1885?

1m John WALKER 1843;  2m James WALLACE c1853

Isabel was born in Aberdeen about 1819, daughter of James GRANT a manufacturer of Aberdeen, but her baptism has not been found, and nothing is known about her parents.

She was probably a servant in Silver St, Aberdeen in 1841; in the next street was a grocer, John WALKER, and she married him at Aberdeen in 1843.  A daughter Isabella was born the next year, but her husband died even before she was baptised.

Isabel became a lodging house keeper off Union St and was there in 1851 with her daughter.  Only 2 years later however she married James WALLACE, a law clerk, and moved to Glasgow.  How did they meet? – Perhaps James lodged with Isabel  Two children, James and Ann Smith were born in Glasgow.  In 1861 she was probably still in Glasgow, as her daughter by her first marriage was being looked after in Aberdeen by Isabel's relative Ann GRANT who ran another boarding house.

Her second husband, James, died sometime between 1862 and 1865 and Isabel returned to Aberdeen to live with her daughter Isabel now married to George Ogilvie STEVENSON.  Her two WALLACE children came with her and she worked as a laundress.

Isabel moved to London with her daughter and was with her in 1881 aged 62, but she was not there in 1891.  Probably she died before this date, but no record of her death or burial has been found.

Her grandson Frederick STEVENSON who grew up with her remembered her as a dour lady  who accused him "whaur's that whistling on the Sabbath"

BIRTH

From census, Isabel was born about 1817/21 in Aberdeen;  from her marriage, she was the da of James, a manufacturer in Aberdeen.  Only one possible C in Aberdeen OPR:

C31Dec1825 Isabella Abernethy da James GRANT advocate, & Margaret MATTOCKS or McGREGOR illegitimate.

wit: John JAMES shipmaster, Miss MILNE.

This is late, and the wrong class - advocate not a manufacturer. No other children to these parents.

Other possible leads:

1)      At her marriage 1843 Isobel was recorded as the da of James GRANT, manufacturer in Aberdeen, not noted as deceased

The only James Grant in the Aberdeen directory at this time who could be called a manufacturer was a shoemaker of 161 Gallowgate and 185 North St.  It seems unlikely that shoemaker would be called a manufacturer rather than a shoemaker, nevertheless, a shoemaker, James Craigen, was a witness to the m of Isabel.

This James GRANT appears in the 1841 census in Gallowgate, born 1782, with Margaret(58), Ann(18) and James(14 an apprentice tailor) none of them born Aberdeen.  I assumed that Margaret was his wife and Ann & James his children, but James, tailor, was found in John St in 1851 born 1826 Aberlour Banff;   OPR has his C to Donald GRANT & Margaret ANDERSON (red38/orange40) who were married 1827 Aberlour.  also John 1829, Peter 1831 Margaret 1836 etc (pink4).  Donald should therefore be son of James who could be the shoemaker of Gallowgate.

James directory entries cease in 1847/8 and he has not been found in the 1851 census.  However at 161 Gallowgate in 1851 and 1861 was John GRANT shoemaker born 1806, Elgin, Moray (with wife Jean and da Whilhelmina red32).  Also there in 1861 but with the FARQUHARSON family was William GRANT grandson, shoemaker, born 1845 Tarland Aberdeen (should be son of GRANT & FARQUHARSON) while in North St (close to if not at 185 was James GRANT shoemaker j born 1809, Grange Banff (with wife Christina and da Elizabeth red25).

summarising these GRANT shoemakers of Gallowgate:

James   b1782 not ABD, shoemaker 161 Gallowgate and 185 North St 1841-41

John    b1806 Elgin Moray  shoemaker 161 Gallowgate  1851-61

James   b1809 Grange Banff shoemaker 185? North St   1861

da?   Ann     b1823 not Aberdeen; with James at 161 Gallowgate in 1841

James   b1826 Aberlour Banff tailor son of Donald & Margaret ANDERSON

gson? William b1845 Tarland ABD shoemaker 161 Gallowgate   1861

There was another shoemaker David GRANT of Thistle St and Silver St from 1838 to 1858 (directory and census), b1808 Forres, Moray, son of Alexander Grant, mason, and Margaret MacIntyre; Alexander m1805 so was probably bc1780 - brother to above James? Children: John C11Jan1807 David C4Sep1808, James C12May1811 all at Forres; James Grant witnessed the latter C.  Could these be the John and James above?  Dates are right but seems unlikely as Forres is about 12m W of Elgin which is 17m W of Keith which is 1m W of Grange.  David Grant m Elizabeth Robertson, children: Margaret, Alexander, James, Louisa; James was also a shoemaker.

Isobel born Aberdeen c1820 does not fit well into these GRANTS who were all born outwith Aberdeen  Only possible link is that Isabella may have been a servant in Silver St in 1841, though not with David GRANT

2)    James GRANT, cabinet maker in Abd of Tark's Close Abd m2Mar1820  Jane MACKIE d of James, crofter in Ellon; w: John GRANT, James BLACK; at St Pauls Abd (black16).  Is he the manufacturer? James Grant’s widow Jane found at Upper Kirkgate in 1851 with da Jane b1829 and son Wm b1833 both Abd.  Neither of these children found in IGI or OPR, so daughter Isobel could also be missing from the records.   No Isobel MACKIE found in OPR Cc1820 (ie born before the marriage).   IGI has only Marion C19Apr1820 St Nicholas to these parents;

C 19Apr1820 Marion d James GRANT, cabinet maker, & Jane MACKIE his spouse by [---ordiner]in presence of Robert KILGOUR & Jane[?] MCINTOSH

 Ellon OPR has James MACKIE m Jean BLACK 3Jun1797:-Agnes1798, Jean1799, James1801, John1803, David1805. (red35)

The 1851 family was in same enumerators block as the CRAIGEN family (the James CRAIGEN who witnessed Isabel’s marriage), which adds some support to this possible ancestry

James CRAIGEN shoemaker appears in the 1841 census (red66) at Black's Buildings shoemaker age 25 m to Janet 20 with dau Isabel also Barbara FARQUHAR (60) and John CRAIGEN 20 all yes.   The St Nicholas register has:

m 7Jny1840 James CRAIGEN shoemaker in parish of Old Machar & Janet GRANT dau of John GRANT, labourer in Aberdeen

by John Stuart McCORRY, Catholic Clergyman in Aberdeen; wit: Alexander MILNE, tailor in Aberdeen;  John INNES MD

Same family at 27 Gallowgate in 51 (red35) tho James now a furniture broker born 1813 Huntly; Janet 30 born Aberdeen.   Nearby Cairnie by Huntly has Margaret CRAIGEN b1782 m James GRANT, farmer 1809, with da Isobel etc 1817;  tempting to think this is Isobel-4, but James was a farmer born and buried in Cairnie, not a manufacturer in Aberdeen, and his Isobel was not born in Aberdeen.

Janet GRANT, b1820 in Aberdeen cannot be a sister of Isabel since her father was John not James, but John and James could be brothers.

3)     Isobel’s daughter Isobel WALKER was with her widow aunt Ann GRANT at Berry Lane in 1861 census.  Ann GRANT was bc1790 Kintore.   Assuming that  GRANT was her married name, she could have married an older brother of Isobel, perhaps born about 1800.  More likely, she was a great-aunt, married to a brother of James GRANT.  Kintore searched for possible Ann C (black138).  Most likely is Ann SMITH (mother was WYNESS; James WYNESS wit to Isabella WALKER's m in 1862) and Isobel WALKER named her daughter Ann Smith.   However, no suitable Ann SMITH/GRANT marriage has been identified(red130); only one in Aberdeen is to John GRANT 24Apr1825 at Rhynie & Essie, but he was born there and his father’s name was John not James, and no brother James known.  Rhynie is some 20m from Kintore tho on the direct road to Aberdeen

Ann GRANT was aged 72 in 1861 but not found in 1871. Searched for her death 1861-71 (black56&143 red90) 5 possibles found (orange93) and certificates extracted:

a 1862 Ann SMITH formerly GRANT OM278;       81 (b1781)

b 1867 Ann GRANT formerly DUNBAR StN 166;    76 (b1791)

c 1861 Ann GRANT formerly REID OM509;        65 (b1796)

d 1867 Ann GALL  formerly GRANT StN 923;     70 (b1797)

e 1864 Ann GRANT formerly CHALMERS StN 1144; 58 (b1806)

None of these can be matched with a C at Kintore.  bcd are most likely on grounds of age but c can be eliminated since this Ann was at Jack Brae in 1861 census so cannot be Ann at Berry Lane.   b was widow of Peter GRANT farmer, da of William DUNBAR and Ann CUMMING, d at 14 Castle St (foot of Gallowgate)  son Peter there at death in 1867; no Ann DUNBAR found C at Kintore; Peter GRANT 24 at 165 Gallowgate in 1851 (b1826 Banff) (red32) but Peter 14 should have been at Berry Lane in 1841 if this is the right Ann.  Ann SMITH was the widow of Andrew SMITH

4)    Also with aunt Ann GRANT in 1841 census was George Reid GRANT,clerk, b1816 N.  Was he son of John GRANT & Isobel REID C1810 Grange or s George & Ann REID C1814 Aberdeen?  As he was born outwith Aberdeen, the former is most likely.  Ann REID probably died 1861 see above.   Other children of John & Isobel are:

John 8Feb1817 Grange

Margaret 14Nov 1828 Keith

Margaret 2 Nov 1821 G

George 20Jan1810 G

James 1Sep1812 G

Isobel   11Oct1812 G

Macduff 2Nov1819 G

William 2 may1823 G

Mary 10Nov1825 G

George Reid GRANT m Jane KNIGHT (dau of Neil McPHEE seaman in Aberdeen, so presumably Jane was a widow tho this is not stated in the register) 14Sep1833 St Nicholas and had John Reid Old Machar 8Dec1834, Mary Ann St Nicholas 8may1837 and James Reid 13Aug1840

5)    Isobel was running a boarding house in 1851; with her was Margaret GRANT married b1821 Keith and her da Helen b1850 Abd; also Jessie FRASER b1810 Keith, possibly Margaret's sister.  James FRASER was a witness at Isobel’s marriage, but the 1851 census shows he was born 1821 New Machar.  Keith & Grange are only 1 mile apart

MARRIAGE

from Aberdeen St Nicholas register:

m 9Jun1843 after banns by Rev James FOOTE, minister in Aberdeen

John WALKER, grocer in Aberdeen & Isabel GRANT da of James GRANT manufacturer in Aberdeen

witnesses:James CRAIGEN, shoemaker Aberdeen; James FRASER grocer Aberdeen

Isobel married a second time to James WALLACE, law clerk, as is shown by her daughter’s marriage certificate, in which she is named as Isabella WALLACE previously  WALKER nee GRANT; also by 71 census and by birth certificates of her children John & Ann in Glasgow.  Marriage must have taken place between 1851 census (Isabel WALKER, widow) and birth of son John in 1856 but has not been found in IGI or OPR.  Two children were baptised in Glasgow.

There is a marriage of James DALLAS to Isabella GRANT Barony Parish 13Mar1853, but the 1861 index to the valuation rolls corroborates the name DALLAS and he was a sadler not a law clerk as was James WALLACE.

DEATH

Isabella was with her daughter in London in 1881 age 62 but was not with her in 1891.  She may have died between these years, but the GRO death index has been searched to 1910 (age 91) for Isabella or Jane WALLACE/WALLIS (black6,red87) and not found in London except for Jane WALLACE died 1885 age 67 St George East; death cert registered by daughter Sophia BLANEY; Sophia Jane WALLACE m James BLANEY at St.Matthew Bethnal Green in 1863, father and witness:James Robson WALLACE, house painter (black118).  This does not look like James the law clerk. Only 1 possible Sophia WALLACE in OPR - C11Nov1844 d James WALLACE & Eliza SMALL (black143).  Much more likely that Sophia WALLACE was C Paddington 1844 and 1881 index has her born at St George East.  This cannot be the required death

The 1881 census index has Isabella WALLACE formerly laundress wid 70 with son John 35 both born Scotland at St Pancras (red86).  This fits very well except for ages: Isabella should be 61/5 and John should be 25.  However, John of St Pancras m Isabella in 1874 aged 28 (from certificate) so this confirms he was born 1846 and cannot be the John b1856 in Glasgow son of Isabella GRANT.  His father was a clerk but named John not James.  No connection with this family.

death of James WALLACE

James must have died after or shortly before the baptism of his last child in March 1858, and before the 1871 census in which Isobel was a widow.  At the marriage of Isobel’s daughter in Jan1862, she was recorded as Isabella WALLACE previously  WALKER nee GRANT; but at her daughter’s second marriage in Dec1865 she was recorded simply as Isabella nee GRANT.  Does this indicate that James died between the two marriages?

certificates  three possible deaths of James WALLACE prior to 1866 registered at Tradeston

1859 Tradeston 622

1859 Tradeston 782

these were not the correct deaths; others also checked by Glasgow FHS but not found

This is a little old for Isabella compared with later census (these give a birth year of 1820/21 making her 20 or 21 in 1841), but close by in this census was John WALKER, j.grocer, who is very probably her husband to be; seems likely therefore that this is Isabella; mistress of house may not have known her correct age
