7 George GRAVES 1747-1827

1m Jane MORRIS 1770   2m Mary MUNDAY 1786

George was baptised in the Hertfordshire village of Furneux Pelham in 1746 and married Jane MORRIS at Langley about 4 miles away when he was 23.  They baptised two children at Langley in 1777 and 1780, but the long interval between marriage and first baptism suggests that other children were born elsewhere or died before baptism.

Some time after, George & Jane moved back to Furneux Pelham.  Another son was born there, but Jane died 3 months later.

George remarried Mary MUNDAY from nearby Albury and they baptised 3 children at Furneaux, though one of them died young.  Mary probably died in 1801 when George was 54 and George eventually returned to Langley where his children had settled.  He was buried there in 1827 aged 80.

BIRTH

George was buried at Langley in 1827 aged 81, so was born about 1746.  There is no suitable baptism at Langley where the first

GRAVES record is in 1777.  George lived much of his life at Furneax Pelham about 5 miles away and there is a suitable baptism

there in 1747:

C 29Mar1747 George s Thomas  & Ann GRAVES at Furneux Pelham

MARRIAGE

Thomas-6 was C 1780 at Langley s George & Jane; no suitable m there but m banns found in nearby Furneaux Pelham:

banns 4Nov1770 George GRAVES & Jane MORRIS of Measden; and other dates

right name combination and suitable date, leaves little doubt that this is correct marriage; the m no doubt took place at Meesden, but the Meesden marriage register for this date is lost.

DESCENDANTS

From the Langley parish register:

C 21Sep1777 George  s George  & Jane GRAVES

C 28May1780 Thomas  s George  & Jane GRAVES

From Furneaux Pelham register:

C 15Jan1786 William s George  & Jane GRAVES at Furneaux Pelham

this baptism however is followed by the burial of Jane and a marriage of George to Mary.  The relatively uncommon name and the marriage 6 months after a burial of Jane leaves little doubt that this is a second marriage for George.

B 19Apr1786 Jane GRAVES

m 10Oct1786 George GRAVES & Mary MUNDAY of Albury by licence

C 14Jul1787 John  s George  & Mary GRAVES

C 28Dec1788 Mary  d George  & Mary GRAVES

C  2May1790 Mary  d George  & Mary GRAVES

no suitable burial found for Mary c1789

DEATH

From Langley register:

B 9Jul1827 George GREAVES  81  [b1746]

Furneax Pelham register has a burial of Mary, but this might be their daughter:
