George spent the whole of his known life in the Surrey village of Worplesdon. He was baptised in Worplesdon church in 1711 and married Susannah MESSER there when he was 20. His occupation is unknown, but probably an agricultural labourer. They baptised six children at Worplesdon, but there is a gap of seven years after the baptism of their second child in 1734, which suggests the possibility that they may have left the village for this period Susannah died in 1773, but George lived for another 14 years.. He was living at Perry Hill in the centre of the village, supported by the parish. when he died in 1787 aged 76 |

from age
at burial, George was born c1711; there is a suitable C in this year at
Worplesdon, with no alternative. It is
assumed
therefore that this is the correct baptism:
C 1711 George s John HAILE [no day or month given in transcript, original register not yet examined]
The
baptism of Elizabeth HALE 6 to George in 1743 at Worplesdon, fits neatly into a
sequence of baptisms at Worplesdon to George & Susannah HALE preserving a
two year interval for four baptisms between 1741 and 1747. Although the mother’s name is not given in
the case of Elizabeth, Elizabeth was not noted as a natural daughter, so it is
reasonably certain that Elizabeth was also the daughter of George &
Susannah. The sequence of baptisms is
preceded by a suitable marriage at Worplesdon:
m 7Nov1731 George HALE & Susannah MESSER
at Worplesdon
C 22Aug1732 Mary d George & Susannah HALE
C 7Jul1734 Hannah d George & Susan HALE
C 31Mar1741 George s George & Susan HALE
C 20Apr1743 Elizabeth d George HALL
C 14May1745 John s George & Susan HALE
C 11Sep1747 Richard s George HEARLE (HALE?)
the seven year gap between Hannah & George may possibly indicate a temporary move to another parish
There is only one suitable burial for Susan and only one for George at Worplesdon:
B 11May1773 Susan HALE
B Jul1787 George HALE 76, Perry Hill, pauper [b1711]
