8 John HALE 1666-1746

m Margaret VULUINS 1694

John was baptised in the parish of Chobham in 1666, son of Henry and Mary HALE.

John’s elder brother, Henry, became a yeoman of Worplesdon, some 5 miles away, but died in 1694 aged 40 leaving bequests to all his brothers and sisters, including John.  Shortly after the will was proved, John married Margaret of Woking at West Clandon and moved to Worplesdon, possibly on to the land previously held by Henry.

A daughter and three sons were baptised at Worplesdon, though the daughter died young and a gap of ten years preceded the last baptism which may perhaps indicate that other children were born between 1701 and 1711.  John lived to his 80th year and both he and  Margaret were buried at Worplesdon.

BIRTH

John of Worplesdon married at W.Clandon in 1694 so a birth date around 1670 might be expected.  There is no suitable baptism at Worplesdon.  Robert & Elizabeth HALL baptised three sons there between 1664 and 1667, but no John.

The will of Henry HALE, yeoman of Worplesdon, made in 1693 shows that he had 4 brothers living named Richard, George, Nicholas and John, and two sisters Elizabeth (RUSSELL) and Mary (DENYER).  The baptismal records of this family were found at Chobham, about 6 miles from Worplesdon.  The coincidence of names leaves no doubt that the family came from Chobham.  John was baptised in 1666, a suitable date for John-8, and Henry’s will shows that he moved from Chobham to Worplesdon, so it is not unlikely that his brother John did also.  Note also that his sister Elizabeth married a man from Worplesdon:

m 14Nov1693 Robert RUSSELL of Worplesdon & Elz’th HAILE otp at Chobham

Perhaps it is significant that John-8 married on 22Apr1694 just after his brother’s will was proved on 10Feb1693/4.

Naming patterns also support this derivation, since the names Richard & George were used in the Chobham family and also by John-8 for two of his three known sons; Overall ther is little doubt that John-8 was baptised at Chobham and moved to Worplesdon after his marriage:

C 27May1666 John s Henry HALE  at Chobham

MARRIAGE

George-7 was baptised at Worplesdon in 1711, son of John HAILE; three previous baptisms were recorded at Worplesdon to John & Margaret HAILE between 1696 and 1701, but mother's names were not recorded in the Worplesdon registers between about 1702 and 1730.  The ten year gap in baptisms to John & Margaret and to John between 1701 and 1711 however makes it uncertain that George’s mother was Margaret.  Thomas HALL baptised three children in this period between 1704 and 1710 so the register is not lacking.  The surname spelling reverts to HAILE for George in 1711, so it seems unlikely that he should have been recorded as a son of Thomas.  Moreover, George had a son named John, but no son named Thomas.  He also had a son named Richard as did John & Margaret.  It will be assumed therefore that George was a son of John and Margaret.

The baptisms are preceded by a suitable marriage in nearby West Clandon:

m 22Apr1694 John HALE of Worplesdon & Margarett VULUIN of Woaking

no reasons known why they married outside both their parishes

there is only one burial of Margaret, and only one of a John at Worplesdon; both are at suitable times, leaving little doubt that these are the correct records:
