Anna HALLEY was born in the parish of Fowlis Wester, but baptised in the nearby church of Madderty. Her father, John HALLEY was living at a farm called Upper Gorthy (possibly now known as Newton of Gorthy). When she was 20 she married William THOMSON and moved to her husband's parish of Methven about 5 miles away. William however was executed (hanged?) only eight months later for murdering his brother David from Edinburgh. Anne remained in Methven until she re-married Patrick BAIN from her home parish of Fowlis and moved back to a farm called Fornought in Fowlis, only about half a mile from where she was born. No baptisms were recorded at Fowlis until ten years after their marriage. They then baptised four children at Fowlis Wester between 1758 and 1764 while they were living at a Fornought, close to Fowlis village. No further records are known. |

Anna HALLEY
married Patrick BAIN of Fowlis Wester at Methven in 1748, but there is no
suitable baptism in the Methven register.
Baptisms at nearby parishes from the OPR index for Perth include the
following:
Blackford b 21Oct1717 dau John HALY & Margaret_GOW
C at Muthill Episcopal
Madderty C

Fowlis
Wester is adjacent to Methven and since Ann married Patrick from Fowlis and
settled in Fornought, which lies next to the Upper Gorthy region of Fowlis (the
farm may now be called Newton of Gorthy, only half a mile from Fornought),
there is a strong presumption that the Fowlis/Madderty baptism is the correct
Anne.
However,
the Fowlis register has this Anne probably married to William THOMSON of
Methven in 1848; crucially however, the Fowlis register notes that William was
executed the following year for murder.
Probably therefore, Anne moved to her husbands parish of Methven, and
stayed there after his death, though there are no THOMSON children recorded at
Methven and no poor payments to Ann in the Methven sessions. This would be because as a single young
woman with no dependants she would have to earn her own living.
Since
Scottish wives retain their maiden name, it is probable that this is the Anne
HALLEY of Methven who married Patrick BAIN 5 years later and returned to her
place of birth. There are however other
suitable baptisms of Ann HALLEY in nearby parishes and these cannot be entirely
excluded since none of them appear to have married in their home parish.
There are
no records of children baptised to Anna and Patrick at Fowlis Wester or
elsewhere in the OPR index until 10 years after their marriage. This makes the episcopal connection at
Blackford (Muthill) look interesting.
Perhaps the first children were C in an episcopal church?
Anna_BAIN-5
was baptised at Fowlis Wester in 1764, the daughter of Patrick BAINE and Anna
HALLEY. The baptism is preceded by a
marriage in the neighbouring parish of Methven:
22May1748
Patr BAYNE in the parish of Fowlis and Ann HALY in this parish proclaimed in
order to marriage 1
29May1748
BAYNE & HALY proclaimed 2
5Jun1748 BAYNE & HALY proclaimed 3
There is
no other suitable m of these parents in the OPR index and since Patrick was of
Fowlis there is little doubt that this is the correct marriage.
However
there is an earlier marriage of an Ann HALLEY in the Fowlis Wester register:
m
25Nov1742 William_THOMSON of Methven & Anne HALY otp; he was executed July
following for murdering his brother David coming from Edinburgh
for
reasons discussed above, it is believed that this refers to the same Ann HALLEY
No C to
Patrick BAIN and anna HALLEY are found in the OPR index until the following at
Fowlis Wester:
C 2Apr1758 Amelia d Patrick BAINE in Fornaught
C
23Mar1760 Marjory d Patrick BAINE in Fornaught
C 4Apr1762 Patrick s Patrick BAINE &
Anna_HALLEY his spouse; in Fornaught
C 8Apr1764 Anna d Patrick BAINE &
Anna_HALLEY his spouse; in Fornaught
The first
of these baptisms is some 10 years after the marriage of Patrick and Anna was
proclaimed and it is possible that up to 3 or 4 children may have been born in
the period 1748-58 and either died before baptism or the record has been
lost. The only C to Peter or Patrick
BAIN in the OPR index in this period are at Dunblane: James 1747, Mary 1749,
Catharine 1751, Patrick 1753, Colin 1755.
Since James was baptised before the m and Dunblane is some way from
Fowlis it seems very unlikely that these are relevant. The Fowlis register is not defective in the
relevant period but the Methven register seems missing 1752 to 1758 (though the
OPR index has some entries); however, the period 1748 to 52 at Methven was
searched but no C to Patrick found.
Two BAIN m
at Fowlis occur at the right time for the BAIN spouse to have been born in this
period:
m
23Apr1773 John BAIN otp & Margaret_HENDRIE otp [bc1750?]
m
21Nov1779 John_WILSON otp & Catherine BAYNE otp proclaimed [bc1755?]
It is
considered more likely however that John BAIN was the son of Patrick &
Isabel (C1728 Fowlis son of Patrick) because John & Margaret used these
names for their children even though this implies an age at marriage of 45 (see
family tree T0) There are possible
parents for Catharine in nearby parishes: (John & Ann of Blackford C John
1760, Cath 1758; John & Janet of Monzie C John 1749, Cath 1759). The mystery remains unsolved of the 10 year
gap between the marriage of Patrick and Anna and the baptism of their first
known child. Also why was she called
Amelia? The name persists through
following generations, but this is the first known occurrence.
