John was born at Upper Gorthy farm in the parish of Fowlis Wester in Perthshire and baptised at the parish church in 1702. He remained on the farm after marrying Margaret SUTTER in the neighbouring parish of Methven in 1706 John & Margaret baptised seven children. All but two of these were baptised at Fowlis; the other two were baptised at the nearby church of Madderty. No other records of his life are known. |

discussion below, John was m in 1706 at Fowlis and so was probably born about
1680. His eldest son was named John, so
he should be a son of John. There is a
suitable C at Fowlis:

seems little doubt that this is the correct baptism.

Considering
the Methven register, three baptisms to John of Cairnie precede the marriage to
Margaret SUTTER, and it can safely be assumed therefore that John of Cairnie
married Elspeth MILLER at Fowlis since this marriage precedes all the Cairnie
baptisms and one Cairnie child was named Elspeth.
The
marriage of John HALY to Margaret SUTTER at Methven however precedes all the
baptisms at Fowlis except one, and since this John was of Fowlis at marriage,
it can also be safely assumed that John & Margaret’s children were those
baptised at Gorthy in Fowlis. Andrew
baptised at Madderty probably also belongs to these parents even though they
were then at Abby farm.

It is
possible that both John’s are the same man, married twice, living in Cairnie
until 1710 and then in Gorthy from 1714.
Both Johns were of Fowlis, and Cairnie in Methven is only about 2.5miles
from Gorthie in Fowlis. However it
seems safer to assume that there were two different Johns as there seems to
be some
overlap in baptisms and names
There is
one other C at Fowlis to John, in 1724 but then no more until 1737:

to Elspeth MILLER was recorded at Fowlis in 1726:
