5 Deborah HARRIS 1805-1867

m Edward NEWMAN 1823

Deborah was baptised at Newington St Mary in 1805, but her parents Charles and Margaret spent more of their lives north of the river in Shoreditch.  In 1818 her father was a brickmaker in Islington.

Five years later Deborah married Edward NEWMAN at Holborn; neither of them could sign their name.  Edward was a labourer near Battle Bridge close to Islington.  They baptised three children at the parish church of St Pancras before moving to Bethnal Green.  Here, Edward became a dust collector or scavenger, probably taking his collections back to Battle Bridge which was a collecting area for dust.  He must have done well from his trade, as they baptised thirteen more children in Bethnal Green between 1831 and 1851 and all their children survived childhood.

For at least 20 years, Deborah & Edward lived in Duke St, Bethnal Green.  Deborah died there in 1867 aged 62.  Her death was registered by her married daughter Mary Ann MANSFIELD, but the death record of Edward has not yet been found.

BIRTH

Census and death certificate records indicate that Deborah was born about 1805 in Bethnal Green (1851) or Walworth Surrey (1861).  Both censuses were recorded in Bethnal Green and the 1851 birthplace is probably a repetition error.  No suitable baptism had been found in Bethnal Green, but the following was found at Newington St Mary (Walworth):

C  8Aug1805 Deborah  d Henry  & Phebe HARRIS

Henry HARRIS was a witness to Deborah's marriage; and this must surely be the correct baptism

MARRIAGE

Census records show that the eldest surviving child was born about 1825 and birth certificates of children born after 1837 show that Deborah's maiden name was HARRIS; this identifies the following marriage:

m 30Nov1823 Edward x NEWMAN otp & Deborah x HARRIS otp by banns at Holborn St Andrew

witness: Henry x HARRIS; Frances x CARRINGTON
