Henry was born in 1772 son of Charles & Margaret HARRIS of Swan Yard, Shoreditch and baptised at the parish church of St. Leonard. He married Phoebe DAVIES at the same church when he was 20. Henry & Pheobe baptised two children at St.
Leonard and a third at Bethnal Green.
They then moved south of the river and baptised a daughter in
Newington in 1805. Thirteen years later in 1818 a son and a daughter were baptised to Henry and Phoebe HARRIS back in Shoreditch. The unusual names make it likely that these were the same parents, but as Phoebe would have been 52 in 1818, these may not have been infant baptisms. At this time, Henry was a brickmaker living in Islington. Nothing further is known of Phoebe or Henry |

Henry was married in 1792 at Shoreditch St Leonard but no indication of his age has yet been found. The London IGI has possible baptisms at Holborn St Andrew (6Nov1763 s Henry & Catherine), at St Mary's Whitechapel (3Feb1765 s Francis & Ann), but the most probable is at Shoreditch St Leonard:
C
14Jun1772 Henry s Charles & Margaret HARRIS of Swan Yard; b 16May1772
This is assumed to be the correct baptism as it occurred in the parish where he was married and because Henry named his first daughter Margaret; (also Henry's daughter Deborah named her last son Charles Alfred). Further evidence is needed such as age at death; Henry is unlikely to have survived to 1851 (and has not been found in various East End 1851 indexes) but may perhaps be found in 1841. The common name makes a search for a death certificate unreasonable.
Deborah-5 was baptised at Newington St Mary in 1805, daughter of Henry & Phebe HARRIS. The unusual combination of forenames identifies other baptisms to these parents in East End of London, and these are preceded by the following marriage at Shoreditch St Leonard:
m
11Jun1792 Henry x HARRIS bch otp & Phoebe x DAVIS spr otp by banns; wit:
James x PRICE, Elisabeth x EATON
C 3Jun1793 Margaret d Henry & Phoebe

C 8Aug1805 Deborah d Henry & Phebe HARRIS at Newington St Mary
C 2Aug1818 Benjamin s Henry & Phoebe
HARRIS of Islington, brickmaker;Shoreditch St Leonard
C 2Aug1818 Mary Ann d Henry & Phoebe HARRIS of Islington, brickmaker;Shoreditch St Leonard
the unusual names of the parents make it probable that these are all their descendants despite the 25 year span. The baptism of the last two on the same day may indicate twins, but perhaps they are not infant baptisms, especially if Phebe's birth date has been correctly identified as 1766, and therefore 52 in 1818. On the other hand, there is a Benjamin HARRIS in the 1881 Clerkenwell census, a bootmaker born 1817 Clerkenwell who may be this Benjamin. No other baptisms to Henry & Phebe found in IGI or at Newington St Mary.
Interesting to note the occupation of Henry as a brickmaker, as it is known that some of Deborah's descendants were involved with the same trade at Enfield (see NEWMAN)
no information; GRO death index searched for Phebe up to Dec 1841; not found in NBI; Henry HARRIS is far too common a name to search GRO index
the only suitable baptism for Phebe DAVIES found in LND/SRY/ESS IGI is at Leaden Roding, ESS:
C
10Aug1766 Phebe d John & Ann DAVIES
however examination of Leaden Roding register shows that this Phebe married in the parish so can not have married Henry HARRIS:
m

John DAVIS
1.
birthdate of Henry might be found from burial record or 1841 census; he
was in Islington in 1818
2. can it
be confirmed that Benjamin and Mary Ann are late baptised siblings? Were they
not infants in 1818? find them in 1841 census at Islington
