[1] John & Magdalene ELSDEN baptised their children at
Chevington from 1704 to 1719, but their marriage has not been found and there
is no confirming evidence that John was John, the son of Edmund baptised at
Chedburgh in 1672. However Chedburgh
and Chevington are only 2 miles apart, and John named his second son Edmund
[2] It is very speculative to identify the Edmund who baptised his
children at Belchamps Otten in Essex with the Edmund baptised at Chevington in
1705. The parishes are about 12 miles
apart. However, no burial or marriage
of the Chevington Edmund was found in that parish and this forename is
relatively uncommon
[3] Edmund ELSDON was church clerk of Belchamps Otten from 1754
to 1761 so is likely to be Edmund junior rather than his father who was buried
in 1759. Edmund was succeeded as parish
clerk by Isaac HELSDON. Isaac however
came from Haverhill in SFK (see HELSDON tree T0) and no connection between Isaac
and Edmund has been established though it seems too much of a coincidence for
successive clerks to bear the same surname without some link between them. Haverhill is about 9 miles East of Belchamps
Otten; Chevington is about 12 miles North.
