5 James JUSTICE c1745?->1790
|
|
|
|
|
m Mary LENNOX 1770
|
|
|
|
James was a blacksmith at Newhouse of Huntingtour (Huntingtower) in the parish of Tibbermore. There is a farm of that name today, about 3 miles from Perth. He was probably born about 1740 but his origin is unknown for certain; the best present guess is that he was born in Scone, near Perth, the son of Robert & Isobel JUSTICE. He married Mary LENNOX, at Tibbermore in 1770. She was from Trinity Gask, a village about 5 miles away. James & Mary baptised ten children at Tibbermore between 1771 and 1791, when their address remained as Newhouse of Huntingtour. At least three of these probably died young, as their names were used for later born children. No records of the death or burial of James or Mary have been found. |

From m in
1770, James probably born about 1740/1750.
The only possible James in the OPR are:
C
7Oct1732 s John
at Murroes, Angus
C
9Dec1735 s Alexr & Helen MITCHALL
at Dundee
b 22Nov1735 s William & Elizabeth
SCOT at Edinburgh
C 26Jun1737 s Alexander & Jean
LAWSON at Kilrenny, Fife
C 17Jun1753 s James & Ann SIBBIE at Auchtermuchty, Fife
C 24Mar1754 s John & Agnes
DAVIDSON at Kilconquhar, Fife
C 24Feb1754 s James & Elizabeth
GILMOUR at Edinburgh
The three
in Fife are nearest to Tibbermore but the Auchtermuchty James is probably the
James who later married Anne FAITHFUL and baptised two children at
Auchtermuchty; the Kilrenny James is probably the James who married Margaret
LAWSON in 1762 at Kilrenny. According
to Scottish naming pattern, James' father should be John. John & Agnes of Kilconquhar baptised
Agnes and William at Ceres and John, Helen & James at Kilconquhar but the
absence of the names Agnes and William from the Tibbermore family is not
promising; moreover this James would have been only 16 if married in 1770
Janet
JUSTICE & John ROBERTSON of Rogorton m 20Dec1773 at Tibbermore which
suggests Janet may be a sister of James but no children of Janet & John's
marriage were found.
There are
two contemporary Perth families whose eldest son was also named John, as with
James and Mary: David & Elizabeth CAMERON, William & Helen IMRIE, so
these are possible brothers of James.
John JUSTICE and Grisel MILLAR m at Tibbermore in 1747 and baptised
William 1748, John 1750, Janet 1753 and Mary 1755 all at Perth; this provides
the William (m IMRIE) and Janet (m ROBERTSON) and there is room for James c1751
The
parents of James' wife Mary LENOX were named John and Catharine, so James and
Mary's first and fifth children may well have been named after Mary's parents. In this event, the names of the 2nd and 4th
children, Robert and Isabel, may be named after James' parents. It is very interesting therefore that Robert
JUSTICE & Isobel COUPER m26Sep1747 at Scone, Perth quite close to
Tibbermore. Robert and Isabel baptised
Isabel 1748, Elizabeth 1753, Elspet 1756, William 1759, Anne 1764 all at Scone;
Robert may have baptised William 1743 and John 1745 by a previous
marriage. There is room for a James
about 1750 and these must be present favourites for the ancestry of James. A closer look at Scone records may help.
The death
certificate of David JUSTICE-4, the bleacher/calico printer, identifies his
parents as James JUSTICE, blacksmith, and Mary LENNOX and the census gives his
birthplace as Tibbermore. David's
baptism at Tibbermore is preceded by the following marriage:
m 4Nov1770 James JUSTICE otp & Mary
LENOX of Trinity Gask proclaimed 21,28,4Nov
C

it is
assumed that Kohn, James and David died young as the names were used for later
children
no JUSTICE
burials were found at Tibbermore between Oct1783 to and 1837; no suitable MI found in index of Perthshire
MI
their two
youngest children both moved to Glasgow around 1825, was this after the death
of their parents, or did their parents move with them?
