|
|
1m Mary Ann LACK 1846; 2m Susannah Speakman SMITH 1848 |
|

|
Samuel was born, married and died in the East End, though he
moved frequently - twelve different addresses are known during his life. He was baptised at Shoreditch in 1823
where his father was a carman. Samuel
also tried his hand as a carman for a short period, but was a butcher of
Shoreditch aged 22 when he married Mary LACK. Within a year of the marriage however, his wife died of
puerperal fever after giving birth to a daughter who also died; mother and
daughter died at the Ship, Boundary St.
Two months later, both of Samuel's parents died of asthma - four
deaths within 3 months. A year later, Samuel, now a carman, married Susanna SMITH. Nine children were born in Bethnal Green
between 1849 and 1868 during which time Samuel was a cabinet-maker, a
boxmaker, a carpenter and a labourer.
In 1877, his second wife died of peritonitis and Samuel and two
unmarried daughters went to live with his married daughter Frances SHORT. Samuel, now a dock carpenter, and still living with an unmarried
daughter, died in 1896 aged 74. |

from
census and m cert, Samuel was born at Spitalfields c.1823; father: Samuel,
carman. There is only one suitable C in
London IGI; this is at St Leonard's Shoreditch and fits perfectly:
C 3Feb1823 b 13Jan1823 Samuel s Samuel
& Martha KILBURN, Webb Square, carman
Frances KILBOURN-3 was born in 1850,
daughter of Samuel and Susannah Speakman SMITH. This unusual forename Speakman identifies the following marriage
certificate for her parents:
m 18Jul1848 Samuel KILBOURN wdr, full age,
carman of 21 Brunswick St & Susannah X SMITH spr full age of 21 Brunswick
St
fa: Samuel KILBOURN dec carman; Francis
Speakman SMITH grocer; wit: James SWEET; Harriet GROVE; at St Mary Haggerstone
after banns
Samuel KILBOURN was a widower and this
marriage is preceded by another at the same church:
m 5Jan1846 Samuel KILBOURN bch full
butcher of 29 Ann's Ct, Shoreditch & Mary Ann LACK spr full
fa: Samuel KILBOURN carman; Charles LACK
printer; wi: William PIKE, Harriet EAST; at St Mary Haggerstone after banns
[Ann's Ct written against groom, Shoreditch
against bride; probably both at same address]
[Samuel's half-sister Mary married Charles PIKE in 1827 but their son William was bap 1839 so is unlikely to be the witness]
It seems
probable that this is the same Samuel despite the change of address and
occupation; but this could be accounted for by the fact that Samuel's father,
the carman, died 25Dec846 (between the two marriages) and the son could have
taken over his father's trade.
Confirmation is given by the death certificate of Samuel's first wife,
Mary Ann and the death of their child:

Ship, Boundary St; wife of Samuel KILBOURN butcher; purpureal fever 5 days
