5 Samuel KILBOURN 1785-1846

1m Elizabeth LANG 1804; 2m Martha COOPER wid 1821

Samuel KILBOURN was born about 1785 probably in Shoreditch as his parents were married there in 1784.  Samuel became a carman operating from Webbs Square in Shoreditch for at least 36 years between 1805 and 1841 (and probably later).

He married Elizabeth LANG at St Leonards Shoreditch when he was 19, and they baptised four children there between 1805 and 1813.  Samuel then baptised ten more children at the same church between 1815 and 1830, but naming Martha as their mother and his wife.

The fate of Samuel’s first wife Elizabeth is not known, but Samuel did not marry Martha until 1821, after their first five children had been baptised.  They married at Beddington in Surrey; this would conceal that they had not been married earlier, but a more compelling reason would have been that Martha may have been Elizabeth's sister.  Such marriages were against Canon law, but did take place, usually well away from the couple's home area.

By 1841 Samuel and Martha were living in Patience St, Shoreditch, and they both died there of asthma within four weeks of each other.  Samuel died first, on Christmas day 1846, aged 61

BIRTH

From death certificate, Samuel was born about 1785, and from census 1781/6.  There is no suitable C in IGI for London or Home Counties. There is however a marriage between Samuel KILBOURNE and Frances Elizabeth WYATT at St Leonards in Dec1784; the birth date of Samuel just after this m and the naming of Samuel's first child as Elizabeth Francis makes it almost certain that Samuel was the first child of this marriage.

MARRIAGE

Samuel KILBORN-4 was baptised at St Leonard's Shoreditch in 1823 son of Samuel, carman of Webb Square, and Martha. Ten baptisms to these parents took place at St Leonards between 1815 and 1830 but no suitable marriage has been found before 1815.  However, a possible marriage took place at Beddington in Surrey after the baptism of the first five children:

m 10Jul821 Samuel x KILBOURN wdr & Martha x COOPER wid at Beddington SRY, both of Mitcham, by banns; w: Robert FARGHER

Although both Samuel and Martha were of Mitcham, Mitcham church was being rebuilt at this time, and all marriages were transferred to Beddington.  Some indication that this marriage is the right one is given by other connections with the COOPER name: John COOPER Bc1818 was with Samuel and Martha in the 1841 census, and Caroline dau of Samuel & Martha m John COOPER, a minor, in 1840 - probably the same man.  Samuel was a widower and a possible previous marriage took place at St Leonards Shoreditch:

m 25Nov1804 at St Leonards Shoreditch; Samuel x KILBOURN bch otp & Elizabeth X LANG spr otp; wi: Robert FARGHER, George LIMMING

That this is the same Samuel is indicated by the same witness to both marriages, even though one marriage was in Shoreditch and the other in Beddington.  Moreover, the Shoreditch address and occupation of Samuel was identical in the baptismal records of children by both wives.  It seems probable that Samuel and Martha were resident in Shoreditch, but chose an out-of-town marriage because they had already baptised five children in Shoreditch as man and wife. Another reason may be that Martha was a sister of his first wife Elizabeth LANG as there is a marriage of Henry COOPER to Martha LANG in 1812:

m 24Feb1812 Henry x COOPER bch otp & Martha x LANG spr otp by licence; at St Giles Cripplegate; w: John TILLER, Charles COOPER

however there are other possible COOPER/Martha marriages and baptisms of Martha and Elizabeth to the same parents have not been found

r 25Jan1847 by Samuel KILBOURN of 4 Patience St pad at Town, Bethnal Green, Shoreditch MDX

Remarkable that they both died of the same cause within 4 weeks; same age, address, cause, and informant on both certificates.  GRO confirmed that details are correct.

Further confirmation of the correct identification of Samuel's two marriages would be given by the burial of 1st wife Elizabeth KILBOURN between 1813 (birth of Elizabeth's last child) and 1821 (Samuel's remarriage as a widower), but this has not been found.  Probably she died nearer the latter date, thus allowing the remarriage.
