6 Samuel KILBOURN c1754-1821
|
|
|
|
|
m Frances Elizabeth WYATT 1784
|
|
|
|
Samuel was born about 1754, but nothing is known of his parents
or birthplace. When he was 30, he married
Frances WYATT at St Leonard's Shoreditch.
A son Samuel was born the following year, and another son Benjamin was
born 15 years later in 1800. It is probable that other children were born in between, but
their names are not known. In 1800,
Samuel and Frances were living at Holywell Mount in the heart of Shoreditch,
but moved to Bethnal Green before they died in 1821 and 1823
respectively. They were both buried
at the Gibraltar burial ground in Bethnal Green. |

From age
at burial, Samuel was born around 1754.
No suitable C in London or home counties IGI. Samuel m Frances WYATT who came from Holborn St Andrew but
Samuel's baptism not found there.
Frances' parents were married at St George Mayfair in 1747 and there is
an interesting marriage there at a similar time:
m 6Jan1746 Mr William KILBOURN & Mrs
Ann KILBOURN of St George Bloomsbury
These are
possible parents of Samuel-6, as the registers of St George Bloomsbury have not
yet been searched (they are not included in the IGI)
The
KILBOURN surname is strong in the counties of Leicester Rutland, Notts and
Derby. Many Samuel's in IGI for these
counties. Some came to London eg:
William KILBURN a victualler b1791 Uppingham, Rutland, s Samuel & Anne, was
at Redcross St, St Giles Cripplegate in 1851.
Samuel-5 Bc1785 had a daughter Frances who married John WEST, a carman,
in 1847 at St Mary Haggerstone. In
1854, a widower John WEST, wheelwright, married Maria KILBOURN at St Leonard
Shoreditch; Maria was born in Leicester, daughter of Francis KILBOURN, a
Leicester stonemason. However, they
seem to be two different John WESTs as their fathers were Thos and John WEST
respectively.
The
Biblical and other christian names in the family are echoed in a cluster of
Kilbourns registered at Chelmsford: Samuel Josiah d 1838, Abraham B 1844,
Frances m 1840, Susannah m 1841, Elizabeth m 1843 There were however Kilbourns in London, eg Clerkenwell (at an
earlier date, and origin of Samuel not yet known.
Samuel-5
was born about 1785 and baptised his first child Elizabeth Frances at
Shoreditch St Leonard. Samuel's baptism
has not been found, but because of the date, the forenames, and the relative
uncommonness of the surname, it seems very probable that the following marriage
also at St Leonard is that of his
parents:
m 19Dec1784 Samuel KILBOURN bch otp &
Frances_Elizabeth_WYATT spr otp after banns; both signed; w: Susanna WYATT,
Henry SPARROW
The fact
that Samuel and his bride both signed the marriage register, and the bride had
two christian names, suggest they were not poor. Their eldest son, though only a carman, remained at the same
address (Webbs Square) for 25 years, which again suggest that he was not afraid
of the rent collector.
Only one
baptism to Samuel and Frances has been found:
C 10Aug1800 b31Mar1800 Benjamin s Samuel
& Frances KILBURN of Holywell Mount; at St Leonards Shoreditch
The
absence of other christenings between marriage in 1784 and baptism of
Benjaminin 1800 both at St Leonards is puzzling; Samuel and Frances Elizabeth
were buried at Gibraltar Row burial ground; this was a Protestant Dissenters
burial ground; I am not sure that this necessarily indicates a non-conformist
background, but this could be one explanation for the absence of baptismal
records. Alternatively, after marrying
in London, they moved back to Samuel's home parish, wherever that may be, and
baptised their children there. No clues
to Samuel's occupation.
Their
eldest son is Samuel-5 bc1785; he was born MDX according to 1841 census
Mary KILBOURN,
who married Charles PIKE in 1827 at St Botolph Bishopsgate is probably a
daughter of Samuel & Frances. Their
first child was named Mary Frances, and the marriage was witnessed by Ann
KILBOURNE but the register also has "Samuel Kil" crossed out. Ann is possible a sister of Mary. Charles & Mary baptised 8 children at St
Botolph Bishopsgate & St Leonard.
The PIKE family is closely associated with the KILBOURNs as William PIKE
witnessed m of Samuel-4 in 1846, his wife Sarah PIKE registered death of
daughter of Samuel-4 in 1846.
Samuel-4
was living at 7 Birdcage Walk in 1850, an address occupied by James Joseph
MILBOURN the following year. The name
MILBOURN is confirmed in other records.
This could be coincidence, but M & K are easily confused in
writing. James was the son of James
Joseph senior, a carman of Battersea, and the closest that can be postulated is
that the occupiers of 7 Birdcage walk were cousins. In this case, James Joseph senior would be another son of
Samuel-6:
