Robert KING was a blacksmith in the Oxford village of Bletchingdon where he was born in 1760. When he was 24, Robert married Susannah ROUSE from the neighbouring parish of Shipton-on-Cherwell. Susannah had a 2 year old illegitimate daughter named Martha who became known as Martha KING. it seems likely that Robert was the father of Martha, but there is no confirming evidence of this. Robert and Susannah baptised eight children in Bletchingdon between 1789 and 1805 before Robert died of consumption in 1820 aged 60. |

Robert
KING was of Bletchingdon when he married in 1786; the licence gives him a birth
date of around 1759, and his age at burial gives him a birth date of about
1761. There is a suitable baptism at
Bletchingdon:
C 9Apr1760 Robert s John & Martha KING
Robert's
eldest son was named John and there is little doubt that this is the correct baptism
particularly as John's grandfather was a blacksmith (see John KING-9), a trade continued by Robert.
It is
believed that Martha KING-5 was the base born daughter of Susannah ROUSE, as
her baptism at Shipton-on-Cherwell 13Jun1784 is followed by the following
marriage in the same parish:
m
29Nov1786 Robert x KING of Bletchingdon & Susanna x ROUSE by lic; wit: John
TOMS, Richard LEONARD
the
licence was issued by Archdeaconry Court:
L
28Nov1786 Robert x KING of Bletchingdon blacksmith bch 27au & Susannah
ROUSE spr of Shipton-on-Cherwell 22 au
there is
no certainty that Robert was the father of Martha and no bastardy bond or
similar has been found in the records of Shipton or Bletchingdon or in quarter
session records. The family of Robert
KING however has been researched pending this clarification

there is
no other Robert KING baptising children at this time in Bletchingdon or Shipton
and it is assumed that Hannah and Susannah KING are the same person. The original Bletchingdon register has been
examined but the writing is very clear.
However Hannah & Susannah can be confused in transcription (upper
case H appears similar to two long s with something in between) possibly also
confused orally if the s is pronounced quietly.
