8 Robert KING 1699-1734

m Martha PAIN (widow) 1722

Robert KING was born in 1699 at Wendlebury the son of a blacksmith.

He became a blacksmith like his father and married Martha PAIN, a widow, in the next parish of Bletchingdon when he was 23.  Five children were baptised at Bletchingdon between 1723 and 1734 but two of them died in infancy.

Robert himself died when only 35 before his last daughter was born.  Martha’s burial has not been found in Bletchingdon, and she may have been buried at Rousham in 1759.

BIRTH

Robert KING-7 was of Wendlebury when he married at Bletchingdon in 1726.  Wendlebury is about 4 miles NE of Bletchingdon and there is a suitable baptism there in 1699 giving a marriage age of 23.

C 1Oct1699 Robert s Thomas  & Margaret KING  b 27Sep1699

That this is the correct baptism is supported by Thomas's trade of blacksmith (shown by his burial record), which was continued by Robert as shown by his marriage licence

MARRIAGE

John KING-7 was baptised at Bletchingdon in 1726, son of Robert & Martha; a series of baptisms to these parents is preceded by the following marriage at Bletchingdon:

m 12Mar1722 Robert KING of Wendlebury & Martha PAIN wid otp by lic

the licence was issued by the Archdeaconry Court:

L  3May1722 Robert KING (signed) of Wendlebury, smith, & Martha PAIN of Bletchingdon widow at St Mary Magdalen Oxf or Bletchingdon

            bond: Thomas SYMONDS

only one possible PAIN/Martha marriage has been found in the OXF m index

m 26Apr1713 Edward PAINE of Upper Heyford & Martha GEORGE of Steeple Aston at Steeple Aston

Martha KING baptised children up to 1734 so a 1713 first marriage is possible; moreover Steeple Aston and Upper Heyford are only about 8 miles from Wendlebury.  However there is no burial of Edward PAIN at Upper Heyford and none in the NBI between 1713 and 1722, though there is one at Bletchingdon in 1758.

only two possible C of Martha GEORGE in IGI both in Berkshire some way from Steeple Aston; 25Oct1692 at West Hanney; 13Feb1687 at Bradfield
