John may have been born in Dunblane, but all the known events of his life were recorded in the parish of Trinity Gask between Dunblane (12miles west) and Perth (9m east). At Trinity Gask he married twice and baptised four daughters. At this time he worked at two nearby farms, Kirkhill and Lawhill. The latter is in sight of the Trinity Gask churchyard where he was buried along with his two wives and two of his daughters, probably in 1779 |

John's 1st
m was in 1729, so he was born before 1710 and probably after 1690. There are no
LENOX in the Trinity Gask registers before 1729 but there are 6 possible
baptisms in the Perth OPR:
C 10Aug1678 s Walter LENNOCH Kilmadock
C 20Mch1692 s Walter LENNOX & Catharin_BURN Logie
C 29Dec1695 s Gilbert LENNOX Dunblane
C 15May1698 s John LENNOX Dunblane
C
6Oct1706 s Jon. LENNOX Dunblane
C 18Jne1710 s John LENNOX Dron
If John
died in 1779 (see below) then the most likely baptisms are the three at
Dunblane. LENOX is a very common name
at Dunblane, and a close link with Trinity Gask is suggested by the occurrence
of uncommon names Gilbert, Beatrice and Walter in these two parishes but hardly
anywhere else.
John's
mother's name should be Margaret or possibly Janet; however sorting out the
above baptisms may be impossible because of the absence of the mother's name,
particularly at Dunblane where there are no less than 27 C to a father named
John LENNOX between 1693 and 1720 including the two above (at least 2 or 3
different John's?). However, there are
only 2 suitable John m in the OPR:
Dunblane
m 29Mar1684 John LENOCH & Jonet_BRYCE
Dunning
m 5Feb1703 John LENNOX &
Margaret_GOTHRIE
the m at
Dunning looks interesting as it is just 5 miles across the valley from Trinity
Gask, and has the correct bride's name; in the Perth OPR (on CD) there are C to
John after 1703 only at Dunblane and Dron.
Dron is nearer, but the C series there starts too soon in 1699. C to John at Dunblane 1703-1724 are:
C~~2Sep1705 Helen
LENNOX d John LENNOX
C~~6Oct1706 Jon. LENNOX s Jon. LENNOX

Since John
is so common at Dunblane, it may be helpful that there were 6 Lenox families m
and baptising at Trinity Gask at the same time as John with less common names:
1st son 2nd son
1st da 2nd da
m 30Dec1729 John LENOCH &
Elizabeth_MORIS Janet Margaret
m 19Jul1734 Walter LENOCH &

---
(? against 1st son etc is because of gaps in the
record, which may mean earlier baptisms unrecorded)
Walter and
Alexander were at Lawhill farm at the same time as John, and the repetition of
names in their children makes it is probable that they, and possibly all at
Trinity Gask, were John's brothers;.
No suitable Alexander baptism was found in the OPR index but there are 2
possible Gilbert’s, 3 Walter’s and 4 possible Matthew’s
Dunblane C 21Mch1708 Gilbert LENNOX s Jon. LENNOX

Dunblane C 13Mch1698 Matthew LENNOX s Walter LENNOX
Dunblane C 20Oxt1702 Mattheu LENOX s John LENOX
Callander
is about 10 miles west of Dunblane. One
of the 2 Gilberts m Isobel MOIR and baptised children from 1741 to 1761 at
Dunblane and Kilmadock (between Dunblane and Callander), including Beatrice and
Gilbert. On balance, I believe this to
be the son of Gilbert & Beatrice, leaving the son of John to be the one at
Trinity Gask.
Speculatively
therefore, John may come from the following family:
Dunblane C 1Jan1693 Walter LENNOX
s John LENNOX
Dunblane C 6Oct1706 Jon. LENNOX
s Jon. LENNOX
Dunblane C 21Mch1708 Gilbert LENNOX s Jon. LENNOX
Dunblane C 15Jul1711 Matthew LENNOX s Jon. LENNOX
there is a
long gap between Walter & John, and Walter is before the Dunning
marriage. However, neither Gilbert nor
Matthew named their 1st or 2nd da Margaret.
Further examination of Dunblane and Dunning records may help; also much
information came from the OPR on CD which needs to be checked against the OPR
index on fiche as I have found the CD version omits some records.
At present
however it is a working assumption that John was the son of John & Margaret
and had brothers Gilbert and Matthew all C at Dunblane. Wills may provide a way forward. The Dunblane Commissariat has
Gilbert
LENNOX 1May1740 and 7Feb1741
Anna d
Walter LENNOX 22Jan1747
James in
Kinkell, Trinity Gask, 7Apr1737
The
baptism of Mary-5 to John and Catherine is preceded by the following m in the
Trinity Gask register:
m 2Mar1739 John LENOCH & Catherine
CLOW both otp
However,
the tombstone of John and Catherine also records the burial of Elisabeth MORIS,
and there is an earlier m of John to Elizabeth:
m 30Dec1729 John LENOCH & Elizabeth
MORIS
It seems
almost certain that this is a first m of John as it is unlikely Elisabeth would
share the same burial plot if she were not a first wife. It is conceivable that John married 3 times,
as there is another m after Elizabeth and before Catharine, but there is no
evidence that this is the same John:
m 20Dec1733 John LENOCH &
Margret_FENTON both otp
May1729 John LENNOCH accused of fornication with Margaret_ALLEN
C 24Aug1729 David natural s John
LENOCH & Margaret_ALLEN
this is
the first LENOX entry in the register, but it is not known whether this is the
same John as the following, though it seems likely
C 18Sep1730 Janet d John LENNOCH & Elizabeth_MORIS in Kirkhill
C 29Apr1733 Margret d John LENNOCH &
Elizabeth_MORIS in Kirkhill
C 25Nov1745 Jean d John LENOCH &

a
tombstone in the graveyard has the following inscription:
1807
THIS IS THE BOURING PLACE
OF
JOHN LENOX ELISABETH
MORIS AND KATHARINE CLOW
AND TWO OF THERE CHILDREN
It might
be assumed that John died in 1807, but since he was first married in 1730, he
would have been at least 97 in 1807.
The tombstone however does not specifically state that John died in
1807, and this may be the date when the stone was erected, (perhaps when
Katharine died, though she would have been at least 87). There is an earlier burial of John in 1779,
which seems a more likely date of death aged about 70
