Herbert Henry (Bert) was born at Elim Cottage, Shoebury, his
grandfather’s house, but by 1891 his parents were living in Cambridge
Cottages, Ness Rd. HH left school at 12 and became a carpenter like his
father. He married Elsie Whent in 1912, but then served in the Fleet Air Arm
during the war, stationed at Killingholme airfield on the Humber Estuary. His
wife contracted cancer, but he was not allowed leave to be with her when she
died in Oct 1918 at the home of HH's parents, Aintree, Church Rd. The next
year, he emigrated to Canada, working as a carpenter on logging sites near
Vancouver. HH returned from Canada after 18 months to help his father who
had now established his own building firm. He met his second wife at the
Pleasant Rd Methodist Church and they married in 1928 at Thorpe Bay, where
Amy was living at Kynance on the sea front, built by H.H.Mann & Sons.
They moved to a newly built house "Wendon" in Church Rd
Shoeburyness, where 4 children were born. The firm prospered in the 1930s
building many houses in Shoebury, such as Herbert Rd, Caulfield Rd, Ulster
Avenue. He told me that one year, the firm made £7000 profit (equivalent to
about £220,000 in 2000) enough to run two cars and employ a gardener and
handyman/chauffeur. The last road, Ulster Avenue, however was only half built when
the second war began. The houses had been built for rent using money borrowed
from a Building Society; all building stopped during the war, and many people
left the area. With no rent coming in, the loans created a problem and houses
were sold whenever possible at very low proces. H.H served as an air raid
warden in the war, and the firm survived with a few older men doing war
damage repairs. Little building was possible in the years after the war; Robin
was working in the firm, but decided to become a Methodist Minister, while I
went to University. With no one to take over, the firm was sold for whatever
terms could be had. The change in his fortunes, left him embittered and many
considered him a difficult man. As a child however, I remember him quite
differently, playing games, and rough and tumbles with his children. He
played golf and bowls and I believe he was very intelligent, despite his lack
of education. He and Amy moved next door to "Aintree" 35 Church Rd
after the death of his brother and sister, and he died from a heart attack in
1958 aged 70 |
