Nathaniel was baptised in 1765 at Colchester, the son of
William, a soldier and blacksmith When he was 14, Nathaniel was apprenticed to a blacksmith in the
village of Belchamps Walter, probably for seven years, and as soon as he had
finished his apprenticeship, he married Elizabeth HELSDON in the neighbouring
parish of Belchamps Otten. Nathaniel & Elizabeth baptised five children at Belchamp
Otten between 1789 and 1800, though one of them died young. They also had a sixth child, though her
baptism has not been found. Nathaniel died in 1800 aged only 34, leaving Elizabeth to bring
up five young children. They all
survived, but nothing is known of the subsequent life of Elizabeth; neither
remarriage nor burial has been found. Family tradition is that Nathaniel was a whitesmith, ie a tin or
copper smith; probably a blacksmith could also work these materials |

Family
story is that Nathaniel was a whitesmith and died as a young man. From his marriage in 1788 therefore, a birth
date of around 1765 is expected. An
extensive search of parishes in Essex and Suffolk near Belchamp Otten resulted
in only two possible baptisms. One of
these was in 1769 at Lavenham in SFK, but there the surname was consistently
MANE and no connection has been made between the Lavenham and the Belchamp
family. The other was at Colchester All
Saints, and for a variety of reasons, this appears to be the correct baptism:
C 3Nov1765
Nathaniel s William & Elizabeth MANN
From other
records, William is known to be a soldier (1762) and a blacksmith (1763) (see
William MANN-6). In July 1780, a
Nathaniel MANN was apprenticed as a blacksmith at Belchamps Walter. The usual age for indenture is 14, so with
the correct unusual name, date and occupation, this Nathaniel is undoubtedly
the son of William & Elizabeth.
Since he was apprenticed at Belchamps Walter, he can also be identified
with confidence as the Nathaniel who married at Belchamp Otten in 1788.
Nathaniel-4
was baptised 1796 at Belchamp Otten, parents Nathaniel & Elizabeth; the baptism is preceded by the following m

Nathaniel MANN at Belchamps Otten
Neither
burial nor remarriage of Elizabeth has been found. The Land Tax Assessments for Belchamp Otten show Nathaniel Mann
occupying land between 1797 and 1800 with owner William ELSDON (Elizabeth’s
brother?). Widow Mann occupied the land
from 1809 to 1818 together with William BYFORD

Note that apprentices made by the parish were exempt from tax and would not appear in this register. The apprenticeship fee was therefore paid privately in this case, most likely by his father
