William was born in 1738 in Colchester, but his father enlisted in the Army before the birth of William’s brother in 1740; by 1745, William and his brother were in the care of a widow, Elizabeth MANN, possibly their aunt or stepmother. When he was 14, William was apprenticed to a blacksmith in the nearby parish of Abberton. He completed his apprenticeship, thereby gaining settlement in the parish. After this he served in the army for an unknown period, during which he married Elizabeth STILES at Colchester in 1762. The following year, Elizabeth, expecting their first child, was removed from Colchester to Abberton. The child was baptised at Abberton in 1763, but then the family returned to Colchester where their second son was born. William was now with his family, and they were all removed to Abberton, only to return once again for the birth of their third son John in 1767. William & Elizabeth may now have moved to Lexden near Colchester where a daughter Elizabeth was baptised in 1777, but no further records of William or Elizabeth are known. |

William
was apprenticed in 1753 and married in 1763 at Colchester St James. The normal apprenticeship is at age 14 for
seven years, so a birth date of 1739 is expected. There is a suitable baptism at St James:
C 4Jun1738
William s William & Mary MANN [not seen; data from Reg. Mann]
Nathaniel MANN-5 was baptised in 1765 at Colchester All Saints, son of William & Elizabeth. There is a suitable marriage in the neighbouring parish of Colchester St James (the churches are less than ¼ mile apart):
m 18May1762 William MAN soldier & Elizabeth STILES
from
Abberton register:
C 23Jun1763 William s William & Eliz MAN
C 3Nov1765 Nathaniel s William & Elizabeth MAN
C 25Jny1767 John s William & Elizabeth MAN
C 24Aug1777 Elizabeth d Wm & Elizabeth MANN
there is a burial of John MANN at All Saints soon after his
baptism [not seen;
data from Reg. Mann]
William & Elizabeth at Abberton can be assumed to be the same as the Colchester parents as there is a removal order of Elizabeth MANN from St Botolph Colchester to Abberton dated 28Apr1763 and another removal order of William & Elizabeth MANN & children from St Botolph to Abberton dated 14Dec1765. It is not yet proved that the Lexden baptism refers to the same parents.

Note that apprentices made by the parish were exempt from tax and would not appear in this register. The apprenticeship fee was therefore paid privately in this case, most likely by his father

Since Elizabeth STILES married in 1762 and named her second child Nathaniel, it seems very probable that she was the daughter of Nathaniel & Hannah born about 1740 and possibly baptised elsewhere as the family was moving between St James & St Nicholas at this time
It is also likely that Nathaniel STILES was the son of Nathaniel & Anne born around 1710
