2 Alice MANSFIELD 1879-1961

m Thomas SHORT 1902

Alice Mansfield was born in 1879 at 7 Mape Street Bethnal Green.  Her father was a master carman, operating from a cabby's yard in nearby Seabright St.  Her brother died in infancy and only one sister survived.  The two girls were treated very badly by their mother who became an alcoholic.  She moved with her parents first to Walthamstow and then to Camden Town when the carman’s business came to an end in 1900.

She married Tom Short at Camden Town in 1902.  The family story is that Tom saved her when she ran down the road with her apron on fire after being attacked by her mother.  This must have been in Bethnal Green, as Tom Short did not live in Walthamstow or Camden Town.  Alice called him her “knight in shining armour”.

Tom became a manager of an oil and colour shop in Salmon Lane market, Stepney and six children were born there while the family lived over the shop, though the first-born died when a year old.  In December 1915 Tom joined the army to serve on the Western Front.  Their youngest daughter was just one year old and the oldest was nine, but Alice looked after the shop as well as her five children until Tom returned in Feb 1919

After the war, Thomas continued as manager of the shop until about 1922 when the chain of shops closed.  Thomas and Alice moved to Manor Park with their family, living in a house owned by Thomas' brother Samuel.  Alice’s mother died in 1925 and Alice’s father came to live with her until his death in 1933.

In the second world war, the house at Manor Park was bombed. No-one was injured, but Thomas and Alice moved to Dover Rd, Wanstead to live in their daughter Rose's house.  Alice died of pneumonia in 1961 and Thomas died of the same cause just four months later, aged 82

Alice had a strong personality unlike her gentle husband Tom.  It is said that she suffered from TB in the days when she was managing the shop and the children, curing herself by going for long walks in the early hours when the air was still clean.  She was rather deaf in later years but was always in command of herself and Tom
