|
m Mary Ann NEWMAN 1850 |

|
James Mansfield was born in 1828 in Bethnal Green where his father, William, was a wheelwright. By 1841, the family was set up in Digby St, just behind the Green. This is where James may have been born, but so far no baptism has been found of James or any of his siblings (he is believed to have at least 4 brothers). James followed his father's trade and became a wheelwright - probably working initially for his father, or perhaps later for his eldest brother William who expanded the family business into James St. James married Mary Ann NEWMAN when he was 22, and moved to Shoreditch where at least 6 children were born at various address between 1851 and 1868. James remained a wheelwright throughout this period. Shortly after their last child George was born, the family moved to Mape Street in Bethnal Green. James continued as a wheelwright at this address from 1871 to 1876, but when his son Francis married in 1877, he had become a carman. By 1881, James had moved from Mape St and the carman’s business was being run by his son Frank. By 1890, James and Mary Ann were in Tottenham living in a house built by Mary Ann’s brother, Edward Newman, who had become a master builder in the area. James continued as a wheelwright in Tottenham until Mary Ann’s death from stroke in 1890. He the moved next door as a lodger in the Mortimore family, while his son William moved into his old house. James was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and finally died from bronchitis in 1895 aged 66. |

Census and
marriage cert show that James was born in Bethnal Green about 1828, son of
William, a wheelwright. The 1841 census
has a James of the right age, the youngest member of the household, with a William,
wheelwright, and there can be little doubt that this is the correct James. However no baptismal record has been found
for James or any of the other children living with William in this 1841 census.
Frank MANSFIELD-3 was born in 1854 son of
James and Mary Ann formerly NEWMAN.
