4 Helen MCLEAN 1799-1872

m David JUSTICE 1821

Helen McLEAN was baptised at Fowlis Wester in 1799 where her father was a ploughman at the nearby farm of Mains of Gorthy.

At the age of 22 she married David JUSTICE at Tibbermore, some 7 miles from Fowlis and moved to nearby Ruthvenfield where David was a bleacher and textile printer.  The worker's cottages where they are likely to have lived are still there.  Helen and David baptised two children at Tibbermore but then moved some 50 miles to Glasgow where David continued his trade.

Four more children were baptised in the parish of Gorbals.  The next move was to Milngavie, about 7 miles north of Glasgow, where two more children were born and baptised at Kilpatrick.  After four years they were back in Glasgow at 15 Commercial Rd in the district of Hutchesontown, Gorbals parish.  Two more daughters were born, one of whom died of TB aged 13.

David died of pneumonia in 1860 aged 68.  Helen outlived him for 12 years, dying of cancer at 94 King St, in the neighbouring district of Calton aged 74, though she was not there in the census of 1871.
