5 Grace/Grizel McNAB 1783-1858

m Peter CAMPBELL 1803

Grace or Grizel McNAB was baptised at Logierait in 1783 when her parents were living in Killiechasie, a detached part of the parish near Aberfeldy.  Aberfeldy is a town some 8 miles up the Tay river from Logierait.  She was baptised Grizel, but frequently used the name Grace in later life as these names are considered equivalent.

Grace married Peter CAMPBELL in 1803 and baptised her daughter Christina there a year later.  They were then living at Aberfeldy.  Some time after this they moved to Perth where Peter was a mason.  Three more children were baptised there between 1814 and 1820, but it is not known why there are no baptismal records between 1804 and 1814.

Peter died in 1838, but Grace remained in Perth.  In 1841 she was living in Perth High St, occupied as a winder, (presumably of flax or similar material); in 1848 she moved to St Pauls Square and in 1854 to 25 High St.  She was probably still living there when she died in 1858 and was buried in Greyfriars cemetery in Perth

BIRTH

The death certificate of Grace/Grizel CAMPBELL names her parents as David MCNAB and ---MCINTOSH and her age gives a birth year of about 1784.  She married Peter CAMPBELL at Dull in 1804 and baptised her first child Christina there (she was then known as Grace McNAB).  There is no Grace/Grizel McNAB baptised at this time at Dull, but there is a suitable baptisms in nearby Logierait:

C 21Mar1783 Grizel d David McNAB & Christian McINTOSH in Killichasie b 17Mar1783

Killichasie is in a detached part of the Logierait parish and only 4 miles from Dull.  As further proof that this is the correct baptism, the eldest daughter of Grace was named Christina and the second known son was named David in strict accord with the Scottish naming pattern

MARRIAGE

Christina CAMPBELL (4) was baptised at Dull in 1804; her parents were Peter CAMPBELL and Grace MACNAB. There is no marriage to these parents in the OPR index at Dull or elsewhere.  There is however a marriage of Peter CAMPBELL to Grizel MACNAB at Dull the year before.  No other m to these parents in OPR index.  From Dull PR:

m 12Feb1803 Peter CAMPBELL & Grizel MACNAB both in this parish gave up their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage

Grace and Grizel are equivalent names in Scotland and there is little doubt that this is the correct marriage.

DESCENDANTS

the OPR index has 4 baptisms to Peter & Grace/Grizell CAMPBELL and three of these have been checked on original registers:

from Dull register

C  6Feb1804             Christ d Peter CAMPBELL & Grace MACNAB in Aberfeldy

from Perth register:

C 20Nov1814 Robert s Peter CAMPBELL mason otp & Grizell MACNAB his spouse;  b 6Nov1814

C 18Jun1817 David  s Peter CAMPBELL flax-dresser otp & Grizzel MACNAB his spouse;  b 20May1817

C 26Nov1820 Margt  d Peter CAMPBELL & Grizel MACNAB [from OPR Perth index only – not checked on original register])

Robert & David were baptised by Wm Orme, minister of the independent (dissenting) congregation in Perth

The gap between 1804 and 1814 suggests the family was elsewhere; possible other descendants include

Peter bc1811, mason of Perth, gave his birthplace as “Nullan” (51), Blair Atholl (61), but no C of Peter CAMPBELL at Blair Atholl until 1816 (red113); m Ann McLAGGAN at Kenmore 13Dec1835: James, b Dundee c1837 seems to be eldest son; others include Duncan, Stewart, Elisabeth, Charles, Peter.  Peter was in Perth at least until 1862/3 (last directory searched).  His death certificate should establish his ancestry

William bc1820, tinsmith of Perth, living at 149 High St, next to Grace in 1841; m Nancy of England (41 census) not found in 51.census

DEATH

from Perth burial register:

B 15Jul1838 d 12Jul1838 Peter CAMPBELL mason 65 [b 1773]

this is consistent with the omission of Peter from the 1841/2 directory and the listing of Mrs Peter CAMPBELL there in 1843

death certificate:

d 3Apr1858 Grace CAMPBELL wid of a mason; died 1 pm at Paul St, Perth aged 74;

fa: David MCNAB farmer deceased;mo:--- MCNAB, maiden surname MCINTOSH deceased;

cause: dysentry 2 days; buried in Greyfriars Cemetry, Perth; informant:David CAMPBELL son, Kinrossie, Collace
