Samuel was born in the village of Hundon in Suffolk in
1730. he married Mary BENSON of the
village when he was 23 at Bury St Edmunds, but they continued to live in
Hundon where they baptised eight children.
Two of these however died young, and after the death of their youngest
child, Samuel’s wife was also buried at Hundon Some time later, Samuel moved to Paglesham in Essex, over 40
miles away, with his only daughter Susannah. The reason for the move is unknown and no other connections
are known between Paglesham and the area around Hundon. Samuel made his will in 1790 and died shortly after aged
60. He was described as a yeoman of
Paglesham and he left property in Suffolk to be divided between his four sons
and his daughter. His burial place
has not been found |

Samuel married in 1753 and died in 1790; a birth date of around 1720/30 is therefore expected. He married and baptised his children in Hundon, and there is a suitable baptism there in 1730:
C 25Oct1730 Samuel s Richard & Mary
MORTLOCK
Samuel
baptised his eldest son by the name of Richard; he also used the names Robert,
John & Susan, names also used by Richard for his children. There seems no reason to doubt therefore
that this is the correct baptism
Samuel & Mary baptised children at Hundon from 1753 to 1769; there is no suitable m at Hundon but the following took place at Bury St Edmunds, St Mary:
m
1Jul1753 Samuel MORTLOCK & Mary BENSON both single of Hundon by
licence at Bury St Edmund, St Mary
Hundon and
Bury St Edmund are in the Sudbury diocese, but the marriage allegation was not
found in the printed records of Sudbury
from Samuel’s will, he had sons named Samuel, Robert, William and John, and a daughter Susanna all alive in 1790. Susannah married in 1793, so possible birth dates for Samuel’s children range around 1750 to 1770. Baptisms of all these children have been found at Hundon in Suffolk some 5 miles from Haverhill where Samuel’s will states that he had property. The children were baptised in the same order as in the will. The baptisms are followed by the burial of Samuel’s wife but not of Samuel. There can be no doubt that the Samuel of these baptisms is Samuel of Paglesham

Samuel’s will of 1790 does not mention his wife, and the Hundon register confirms that his wife Mary was buried there 21 years previously:
B 26Mar1769 Mary wife of Samuel MORTLOCK
Samuel’s will shows that he died between 25Jan and 3Feb1790, but no burial record has been found at Paglesham or elsewhere
