BIRTH

Richard married Mary in 1724 and lived in Hundon; he died in 1750 so a birth date of around 1700 or earlier is therefore expected.  There is no suitable baptism at Hundon, though Richard & Susan MORTLOCK were baptising children there at this time after a marriage in Wickhambrook:

m      1691 Richard MORTLOCK & Susan TIFFIN at Wickhambrook (from Boyd m index)

C  7Mar1693+John      s Richard & Susan MORTLOCK

C 24Apr1696 Peter     s Richard & Susan MORTLOCK [169?]

C  5Nov1700 Robert    s Richard & Susan MORTLOCK

C   Nov1702 Elizabeth d Richard & Susan MORTLOCK

C  7Jny1705 James     s Richard & Susan MORTLOCK

C 11Mar1708+Albert    s Richard & Susan MORTLOCK; B  1Mar1731+Albert(?ine) MORTLOCK

B 21Nov1710 Richard MORTLOCK

B 12Dec1723 Susan MORTLOCK

Possibly these parents also had a child named Richard baptised at Wickhambrook or elsewhere.  No MORTLOCK baptisms were found in the following nearby parishes, but the register of Wickhambrook has not yet been examined:

Barnadiston

Bradey Lt

Bury St Edmunds, St Mary

Cowling (difficult reading of original)

Denston

Depden

Lidgate (1697-1700 missing)

Stradishall

Thurlow Gt

The IGI has a baptism of Richard at Denham nr Bury St Edmund 10Jny1680/1, son of Samuel & Elizabeth (a Denham register transcript gave no extra information).  Denham is about 7 miles from Hundon, but the baptism is a little early, giving a marriage age of 43 for Richard.   Moreover, a Richard & Mary MORTLOCK baptised children at Hundon from 1712-1722 and this is probably the Richard C1680/1; no suitable Richard/Mary marriage found at Denham

No suitable Richard MORTLOCK baptism found in VRI

MARRIAGE

Samuel MORTLOCK-6 was baptised at Hundon in 1730, son of Richard & Mary.  There is a prior baptism to these parents in 1727, but no preceding marriage at Hundon.  There is however a suitable marriage at Wixoe just 3 miles from Hundon:

from Wixoe register transcript:

m 21Jun1724 Richard MORTLOCK & Mary DOUBTY at Wixoe

no MORTLOCK or DOUBTY C or B seen 1700-1770 at Wixoe

there is a much later marriage of Richard MORTLOCK at Hundon, which is probably that of Richard’s eldest son, mentioned in his will

m  5Jun1749 Richard MORTLOCK & Susanna MORTLOCK

this Richard may have been buried at Shimpling 26Mar1817 age 86, some 8 miles from Hundon

DESCENDANTS

from the Hundon register:

C  3Sep1727 John   s Richard & Mary MORTLOCK

C 25Oct1730 Samuel s Richard & Mary MORTLOCK; m 1Jul1753 Mary BENSON at Bury St Edmund, St Mary

C 20Apr1734 Susan  d Richard & Mary MORTLOCK

C  6Nov1737 Robert s Richard & Mary MORTLOCK

C  5Jun1743 Sarah  d Richard & Mary MORTLOCK

Richard’s will of 1750, named Richard as his eldest son, followed by Samuel and George, and a daughter Susan.  Unless there are errors in the Hundon register extract therefore, it seems that John, Robert and Sarah died young, and that baptisms of Richard (c1725) and George (c1732) are missing from the register or occurred elsewhere

DEATH

there is a burial of Richard MORTLOCK at Hundon in 1750, which probably refers to Richard-7; no other suitable candidate for this burial has been found in the Hundon register and from his will, it is known that Richard died between Oct1750 and Oct1752

B  4Nov1750 Richard MORTLOCK

no suitable burial or remarriage of Mary MORTLOCK has been found; no suitable burial in NBI
