4 Mary Ann NEWMAN 1829-1890

spouse's records

m James MANSFIELD 1850

Mary Ann was born in 1829, the fourth child of Edward & Deborah NEWMAN.  Edward was a dustman or scavenger in Bethnal Green whose family eventually consisted of sixteen children.

Before the last was born, Mary Ann aged 21 married James MANSFIELD, a wheelwright of Bethnal Green.  They lived at various addresses in Bethnal Green while their six children were born and James continued as a wheelwright.

By 1871 they were living in Mape St. Bethnal Green, where James became a carman.

By 1881, James had moved from Mape St and the carman’s business was being run by his son Frank and by 1890, James and Mary Ann were in Tottenham living in a house built by Mary Ann’s brother, Edward Newman.

James continued as a wheelwright in Tottenham until Mary Ann’s death from stroke in 1890.  He the moved next door as a lodger in the Mortimore family, while his son William moved into his old house.  James was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and finally died from bronchitis in 1895 aged 66.

BIRTH

From marriage certificate and census records, Mary Ann was born about 1828 in Bethnal Green dau of Edward NEWMAN contractor.  A series of census returns shows Edward NEWMAN as a contractor or scavenger with his wife Deborah.  Mary aged 12 was with this family in the 1841 census.  This information, and the uncommon names Edward & Deborah, is sufficient to identify the following baptism at Stepney St Dunstan, even though the register records Edwards occupation as carman:

C 19Jul1829 Mary Ann d Edward & Deborah NEWMAN of Bethnal Green, carman
